How to Support Yourself as a Mama

This is for our mamas. As a mama-founded and mama-run company we know a thing or two about the beautiful and not so beautiful moments of motherhood. We choose to celebrate it all. We choose to celebrate YOU and the choice you’re taking in being more present to your whole-being, to your joy, freedom, bliss and balance just by being part of our Philosophie family.


Motherhood is a powerful journey. It can be so heavy at times, but we wouldn’t change it for a single second. Every mom out there is simply trying to do the best she can for her children.


One question that we see a lot here in the community is, “How do you raise happy, healthy and independent kids?”


You raise happy, healthy and independent kids if you are as well. If mama’s happy, kids are happy. Our kids love to echo everything we do, from the good to the bad and everything in between. From making and loving superfood smoothies as much as we do to random dance parties. It helps us to be better humans, and we can learn so many lessons from them.


It’s never an easy journey and sometimes it feels as if the house has literally flipped upside but we’re sharing some of our favorite ways to support yourself as a mama. You matter above all else.

CHECK IN ON YOUR FEELINGS

Check in on your own needs. Ask yourself, “What do I need at this moment to feel most aligned with myself?” If you find yourself overwhelmed, stressed or burnt out, you need to address it. Being our best selves and being the best mama we can is honoring YOU and your needs. In order to be the best mama you can be, you need to take priority. The amount of love you give yourself and family will be reflected in your kiddos. They’ll give all that love right back.

Food is energy! I love making my kids yummy and nutritious meals loaded with Philosophie superfoods. Substituting a lot of traditional ingredients for healthier options is an easy parenting trick so that our kids stay healthy but still get to enjoy their favorite meals. 3 Mood-Enhancing Superfoods

“You are what you eat,” or as the saying goes. So often we forget that food IS energy. Ever felt tired after a big meal? Ever felt a mid-afternoon caffeine crash? What you consume can affect whether you live life from a low vibrational frequency or a high vibrational one. And we all want to be in a high vibration where we feel happiness, love, joy and abundance!


Raise your vibration with superfoods! They are some of the highest vibrational foods on the planet and full of magical properties that can protect us from getting sick, balance out our internal systems (hello, less stress!) and keep us feeling energized, vibrant souls. Superfoods are full of healthy, strong vibes that protect you and build you up - fueling you to be the best self you can be. 

What makes a food a superfood? 

It’s not as easy to Google as you may think because there’s not a concrete definition out there. A superfood is often described as any food that contains high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Most likely, you’re already enjoying superfoods throughout your day! Ever had a piece of dark chocolate? Research has shown that dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. It's recommended that you look for chocolate with 60% or higher cocoa content; the darker, the better! 


A healthy diet incorporating a variety of superfoods will help you maintain your weight, fight disease, and live longer. One thing they all have in common: every superfood is going to be a 'real' (unprocessed) food. 


Incorporating superfoods into your diet can be life-changing. Unbalanced hormone levels, poor inflammatory response, mineral imbalance and improper fatty acid ratios are typically at the root cause of many mood disorders like anxiety and depression. By balancing these systems and providing the body with proper nutrition, improved mood and mental clarity can be achieved.


Here are three of our favorite mood-enhancing superfoods you should try.


RAW CACAO is one of the most abundant sources of antioxidants in the world (far more than blueberries and red wine) and will give you amazing energy and mental clarity. It also has a great amount of Magnesium in it, which most people are deficient in and don’t even know it. Cacao has natural mood-boosting compounds, which help restore natural energy and ease mood imbalances. I love using cacao in my morning coffee and in my favorite sweets and baked goods.

All of my kiddos tried a yummy superfood smoothie at a young age where I can be sure they’re getting good fats, healthy sources of protein, no weird fillers and nothing processed. 


Sometimes, in the morning, I'll add raw cacao to their oatmeal. Other times I'll sneak superfoods into an "ice cream" where I blend frozen bananas, spinach and cacao, maca or other superfood blends. These tricks ensure my little loves are getting everything they need nutritionally. 


Superfood Coffee Recipe

I can't survive a morning if I don’t get my caffeine fix and my go-to is this amazing superfood coffee. It has all I need to wake me up and fuel my body for the day. 


Ingredients:

1 cup high-quality coffee 

1 cup homemade cashew mylk or nut milk of choice

1 tbsp Cacao Magic

1 tbsp Coconut Magic Coconut Butter or almond butter

Sweetener: organic honey or Cacao Bee Honey


Directions:

Add all ingredients into a blender and blend! Pour into a mug and enjoy!

Manifestation 101 And a Ritual You Can Do Now

You have the ability and the limitless potential to manifest the life of your dreams. It comes down to the limiting beliefs and THE ENERGY surrounding that magnetism/attraction and what you believe you deserve.


It’s a matter of visualizing your highest self, or the thing you want, and how you will FEEL as that version of her/him. Once you can see that version of who you want to be aka WILL BE and start showing up as her/him now, tomorrow and every day until it just bleeds into who you become.


There isn’t one way to manifest, it’s something that’s personal and real to YOU and your own innate powers. I’ve often found that what works is getting super clear on what it is I want to manifest, write it down and figure out the work I need to do to get there.

My Journey with Manifestation

When I was a little girl I realized I had this secret power. I moved from house to house with my single mama and had to leave my friends over & over as we moved to different towns. I realized that I could be sad my dad wasn’t around and that I had to leave all my friends or I could choose to reframe my thoughts and see the beauty in the unknown and the adventure. I wanted to be happy so I decided to be happy (even though things were chaotic AF). 


When I was a personal trainer in my early 20’s I helped people visualize their goals, their next best version of themselves, and once we really could get to that place I encouraged them to MOVE from that energy. To walk across the room with that lighter version of themselves. To carry themselves as that energy.


Nearly three years ago I brought a magical little unicorn baby earthside. Before her creation, there was always this part of me that felt incomplete. I would dream of a baby girl. I imagined adventures together as a family of five, but life wasn’t in alignment. I called myself out on not fully showing up to this decision. That out of fear, out of wanting things to stay in the easy flow, I was denying myself one of the most rewarding pleasures in all of life: raising a little girl. It was then that I spoke my intentions into reality. I created a dream scenario/moving meditation that entailed waking up in my bedroom to the sound of our baby girl's coo from the basket beside the bed and envisioned her with me every step of the day. I believe I manifested, or womb-ifested, this dream into a reality.



Do manifestations work? 

Manifestations are the sum of our intentions and aspirations coming into fruition. Manifestations identify goals, aspirations and desires, and are created through pure intention. I’m constantly in awe of the magic of the whole thing and the ability to step outside your ego.


Manifestations work because you consciously put in the work and the steps to align with your intentions. It’s a practice like anything else and it requires an input of energy. The best place to begin is meditating with a cozy cosmic tonic, calling them out, and speaking them to the Universe whether it’s on paper or in your heart. Begin planting the seeds for your manifestations and map out the steps to call them into reality with a manifestation ritual. 


Manifestation rituals are a beautiful way to set intentions, clear out energy, gain clarity and connect through grounding energy. 



What tools should you have at your manifestation ritual?


Palo Santo or Sage

A smudging and cleansing ritual is a great way to clear away any negative or stagnant energy in your space. Since manifestation involves making space in our lives for something new to enter, sometimes old energy needs to be cleansed. 


Guided or silent meditation
You can use ones found online or through apps like Calm and Headspace. Meditation is a great way to call in intentions and elevate your vibrations. Meditation and visualization will allow your subconscious to show itself to you so you can align it to what you’re calling in whether that’s more financial stability or a deeper connection in a relationship. 


Vision boards.

Vision boards are the best way to put your manifestations down on paper and help you clarify your intention and clearly visualize what you want. Set out poster paper, magazines, and craft supplies to dig through and get creative. 


Gather your favorite crystals.

Crystals help connect and ground your energy as you align with your intentions and call them out to the Universe. I’m a fan of citrine and clear quartz for manifesting.


Make a soothing latte or tonic to sip.

It feels SO good to lovingly care for your body and fuel it with nutrient-dense, healing food and drinks. Make a delicious detoxifying Cacao Magic latte or superfood tonics - I’m currently loving this Cacao Chamomile Elixir


Use an angel card or tarot card deck.

Angel and tarot cards are a great way to tap into your inner wisdom and receive support from spirit and magic of the Universe. I love The Wild Unknown and The Moon Deck. Use cards as a way of tapping into your intuition, inspiration and creative powers. 


It’s amazing what happens when you really and truly step into your life, face your fears, process it ALL and show up 100%.

Eco-Friendly Grocery Shopping Tips

Across the planet, we are waking up to systems in place that no longer serve us as a collective; we are pulling many things up from the darkness into light. The state of our Mother Earth has always been present and there are MANY doing all they can to fight climate change and spread more sustainable and eco-friendly practices, but more are joining the cause. 


We can become part of the change by using more reusable products, shopping with reusable bags and totes, refusing bags and utensils if you order takeout, buying more sustainable products in your home to clean up messes, and become more mindful on your food consumption.  At Philosophie we're on a mission to make more conscientious choices so we can create the best environment for our little ones and the Philosophie community. The goal is to make lots of little daily changes to be more eco-conscious and choose goods, products and food with more intention. 

Why do we run a sustainable wellness brand? 

We don’t need to be the first to tell you that climate change is real and scary. It’s so important now more than ever to be part of the solution and not the problem. We want a world that our children’s children can grow up in and experience the beauty of this planet. 


As the food we eat plays such a large role in shaping how we use and treat our planet, it’s essential that we make environmentally conscious choices while gathering all the ingredients for our yummy recipes. We make it a point to research who and where we source all our ingredients for all our superfood blends and infusions


This is also important when it comes to your food waste within your own home. Mamas, I know how challenging it is to get your kiddos to eat everything on their plates. In our own homes, we are always looking for new and fun ways to use leftovers which often look like using leftover fruits and veggies in smoothies, soups or bowls. When you make your leftovers into an entirely new meal it makes it a new experience for the whole family to enjoy!

Here are our top tips for shopping sustainable while shopping for nutrient-dense foods:


Always ask questions about your food. What ingredients are used and where do these ingredients come from? Are they sustainably grown and harvested? This is so SO important, especially for ingredients like palm oil (which is oftentimes unsustainably harvested, harming natural ecosystems and beautiful creatures like orangutans).


BYOB (bring your own bag) - including produce bags! While many stores have completely banned plastic bags or charge extra for them, produce bags remain a staple. You can find reusable produce bags made of nylon or cotton. 


Shop the Farmer’s Market. By hitting up your local Farmer’s Market, you have access to an abundance of amazing fruits, veggies, seeds, and nuts AND you can learn exactly where and how they were grown. Local, organic produce has a much smaller carbon footprint than larger grocery chains that ship theirs from far distances. And make sure to bring your reusable totes wherever you go!


Shop in season. Food can travel a long way to make it to your local grocery store and into your home. To help the environment, try shopping for produce that’s in season and it often saves you money too!


Buy in bulk. Go to grocery stores that offer grains, nuts, etc. in bulk and bring your own jars. It’s so cute to see them around your home, too! Turn to reusable products like our Philosophie Smoothie Jars. I’ll be going reusable with all of baby girl’s diapers and I’ve cut out sack lunches/ziplock bags for the boys.


Practices in place

A part of nourishing ourselves is respecting and protecting this beautiful planet that we call home, we feel it’s SO important to ensure that the Philosophie products also support the environment. All of our superfood + protein blends come in 100% biodegradable kraft paper, created with long, unbleached fibers from maritime pine that require minimal chemical processing and keep the wood’s gorgeous natural color. 


The paper itself actually decomposes naturally, just like the leaves of a tree, and will return to its original state of cellulose fibers in several weeks—completely safe for the environment! And while these bags are green and can be put back into the earth, their fibers are super strong so they can be reused again and again! Mental Health Check-In + Tools for Healing

Mental health is just as important as physical health. You NEVER KNOW who is struggling and it’s our job as humans to show up with compassion, with love and support, and with understanding. You are not alone. You are not meant to do life alone and no matter what your home life, work-life or romantic life looks like there are people out there that support you.


Let’s be remembered as kind, good humans who did our best, and spread love, okay?


We created this community and our superfood blends to help you live a life of vibrancy and abundance. A major tool we use to experience the beauty of life is through our food. Food has the power to heal. It is so much more than survival. It is nourishment. It grounds you. It brings you back into your body and shows you how bountiful our beautiful home is here on Earth. 


Well-being is more than the high vibrational food we eat. It’s mental health, physical wellness, and emotional stability. There are little daily habits you can incorporate into your routine to help you check in on your mental well-being.


You are never too much or not enough. It’s okay to take a break and rest. Above all, it’s okay to ask for help. We love you!

Breathwork

With all that’s going on in the world having a breathwork practice to still the mind and ease your stress is absolutely imperative. We rely on our bodies and our breath to keep us grounded and centered. The moments when you go really IN are when you focus on what’s going on underneath the surface. The best place to start? Your breath and lifeforce energy. 


Try this exercise: Take a DEEP BREATH in through your nose and fill up your whole body. Exhale through your mouth and release any stuck or stressed energy. Place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly then repeat. Take another deep breath in through your nose - the biggest one you’ve taken all day - and exhale it out with a sigh. Give yourself a hug and repeat as often as you need!



Drink Water

Drink your water! Our lives can be so full, chaotic, and beautiful that sometimes stress, fear, worry or anxiety arises because we aren’t caring for our physical needs. A big glass of cold water can be SO healing. We love ours with a little bit of sunshine. What about you?


Journal

Writing can be a powerful way to release your daily worries and clear your mind. Writing your stresses, worries or concerns physically on paper can be a mental tool to clear up your headspace and take the weight off your shoulders.

Yoga or Movement

Yoga allows us to bring it ALL to the mat and greet every part of our bodies + true self. To feel all our power and light it. Try this pose to get out of your head and back into your body. 



Try this heart-opening yoga pose:

1) Lie prone on the floor. Stretch your legs back, with the tops of your feet on the floor. Bend your elbows and spread your palms on the floor beside your waist so that your forearms are relatively perpendicular to the floor.

2) Inhale and press your inner hands firmly into the floor and slightly back, as if you were trying to push yourself forward along the floor. Then straighten your arms and simultaneously lift your torso up and your legs a few inches off the floor on an inhalation. Keep the thighs firm and slightly turned inward, the arms firm and turned out so the elbow creases face forward.

3) Press the tailbone toward the pubis and lift the pubis toward the navel. Narrow the hip points. Firm but don't harden the buttocks.

4) Firm the shoulder blades against the back and puff the side ribs forward. Lift through the top of the sternum but avoid pushing the front ribs forward, which only hardens the lower back. Look straight ahead or tip the head back slightly, but take care not to compress the back of the neck and harden the throat.

5) Urdhva Mukha Svanasana is one of the positions in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. You can also practice this pose individually, holding it anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds, breathing easily. Release back to the floor or lift into Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward-facing dog) with an exhalation.
