The Best Ways to Eat Raw Vegetables

The Best Ways to Eat Raw Vegetables

Raw vegetables offer fiber, antioxidants and numerous vitamins and minerals, but munching on them plain can make you feel like a rabbit. You can kick up the flavor by using them in creative ways and as a substitute for higher-calorie, nutrient-poor fare like chips and pretzels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people who eat more generous amounts of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet reduce their risk of chronic diseases such as stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Salads

Salads are a natural for raw vegetables, but the salad often served up in restaurants or the American home consists of iceberg lettuce, a gassed tomato and a few slices of cucumber with a slathering of ranch or Italian-style dressing. Make your salads more appealing by focusing on richly colored greens such as romaine, spinach and baby arugula. Unlike iceberg, these lettuces impart flavor and contain significant antioxidants that help fight disease-causing free radicals in the body. Eat a spinach salad with dried cranberries, sliced raw onion and heart-healthy walnuts. Try arugula with shredded carrots, diced apple and pecans. Romaine may be the classic base for a Caesar salad, but you can add to its nutritional value by tossing it with avocado, salsa and black beans. Salads do not always have to include lettuce. Use celery as a base with diced bell pepper, jicama and walnuts, and dress it with a citrus vinaigrette. You may think of coleslaw as a cookout standby, but consider cabbage as a base for other salads. Shred raw Napa cabbage and add edamame, almonds and an Asian dressing. Thinly slice raw zucchini and yellow squash and toss with lemon, olive oil and basil as a pairing for simple roasted or grilled fish.

Smoothies!

a great way to get raw green vegetables into your body is by throwing a handful of spinach or kale into your blender! You won't even know it's in there judging by taste, so trust me when I say to give it a try! A quick and easy smoothie recipe with raw spinach or kale:

  • 8 oz almond, oat, hazelnut or coconut mylk
  • 1 handful spinach or kale, washed and de-stemmed
  • 1 banana or 1/2 cup mango
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp agave
  • 1 handful of ice

Partner with Dip

A crudite platter with the ubiquitous cup of mystery dressing often sits untouched at a party. Make it appealing by dressing up the dip and the vegetable offerings. Try jicama, endive, green onions or fennel as dippers, and serve them with hummus, baba ganoush or tahini. Instead of using tortilla chips to dip in salsa or melted cheese, try endive leaves, which are cupped and make a perfect scoop. Serve a classic cheese fondue and offer raw vegetables as dippers instead of cubes of bread. Experiment with bagna cauda, an Italian broth-based dip made with olive oil, anchovies and garlic, which pairs well with raw zucchini and bell peppers.

In Lieu of Bread

Instead of reaching for nutrient-poor white bread, try wrapping your next snack with a large leaf of romaine or butter lettuce. Use lettuce leaves in place of taco shells to provide crunch and a cooling contrast to the warm filling. Spread nut butter on celery sticks to save calories and obtain more fiber than you would if you used white toast. Make a raw hummus with sprouted chick peas, but instead of spreading it on a roll, eat it dip-style with carrots, bell peppers and grape tomatoes. Here's a great recipe for a raw sunflower seed dip in place of packaged dips!

Simple Tips for Glowing Skin

There’s so much talk on the right and wrong way to treat your skin. Advertisements flood your social feeds for products with harsh chemicals or expensive skin therapy treatment that loads your skin with a ton of product but doesn’t get to the natural root of your issue.

Philosophie Goddess, Kate Hordyski, shares her secrets to healthy, glowing skin that can be easily accomplished in the comforts of your home and with natural remedies.

I’m kind of obsessed with natural skin care. I’ve been making face masques and scrubs since elementary school.  My philosophy for skin care is less is more, and today I’m going to share my top tips for getting beautiful glowing skin.

Everyone’s skin is different and what works for me may not necessarily be the right fit for you.  I always encourage people to do what is right for them, but the following tips have been total game changers for me!

Wash with water

When I was younger, I washed my face with harsh commercial cleansers (who could ignore the allure of the 90’s Clean&Clear ads?!) and they wrecked major havoc on my dry sensitive skin.  When I began learning more about natural skin care and DIY products, I swapped out these cleansers for natural alternatives like the oil cleansing method and honey washing.  This led to a serious improvement in my skin but because my skin is so prone to dryness, it still caused some flaking.

Then I began thinking, does it really make sense that I would need a product to wash my face?  Maybe our skin is perfectly designed to take care of itself?  I immediately switched to using water only and my skin has never looked better.

On the rare occasion when I wear foundation or BB cream, I’ll remove it by slathering my face in oil and then using Kleenex to wipe off the makeup.  Microfiber clothes are also great options for removing makeup.

Hydrate with a good oil

After splashing my face with water (in the morning and before bed), I moisturize with oil.  If I lived in a warm, tropical climate I’d probably skip this step altogether and let my skin hydrate itself, but the climate in Canada requires extra moisturizing!

Coconut oil has been the wellness world’s miracle product for years, and no disrespect but it doesn’t do it for me!  I find that it clogs my pores, and instead I love baobab and apricot kernel oil.  Another great one to check out is Philosophie’s Chrysalis Healing Oil.

I also love adding in a drop or two of essential oils; lavender and bergamot are two in particular that are amazing for most skin types.

Simple face masques and exfoliation

For years, my go-to face masques have been raw honey mixed with a superfood powder like cacao, spirulina, or camu camu.  If you’re already enjoying Philosophie’s superfood honeys, try them out as a masque!  Honey is so hydrating and the superfoods add an awesome dose of vitamins and nutrients. Serious skin food.

I’m also in love with clay masques.  There are different clays that are best suited to different skin types including bentonite, French green, and kaolin.  Rhassoul is my clay of choice; it clears up blackheads like no other and is so rejuvenating for dry skin.  I usually do a face masque once every two weeks or so.

Exfoliating is another key step in glowing skin, and it helps to remove dead skin cells and promote regeneration.  I usually exfoliate using a konjac sponge, a mix of sugar with a few drops of water, or a chemical exfoliation.  The last one sounds a lot more intense than it really is, all you need to do is rub a piece of pineapple or papaya over your skin and let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing off.  These fruits are both full of enzymes that help to break down build up on your skin.  I usually exfoliate once or twice a week.

Face massage and cupping

I am obsessed with face massage and cupping!  They are both great ways to minimize fine lines, boost circulation (which increases the flow of blood and nutrients to your skin), eliminate bloat and puffiness, encourage lymph flow, and so much more.  Plus, they feel amazing!

There are tons of articles and videos online on how to do a proper face massage, so you can check those out, but for me I just keep it simple and do my own thing.  When you apply your oil or moisturizer, just spend a few extra minutes rubbing it in.  My face retains fluid easily, so one thing I do daily is to use my palm to make long sweeping strokes from my jaw line to the base of my neck, which helps to reduce bloat and facilitate drainage.  Always make sure you apply oil before massaging/cupping.

As for facial cupping, it’s similar to the Chinese Medicine practice (remember those red marks we all saw on the backs of celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Anniston, and Michael Phelps?) but done at home (and it won’t leave the marks!).  I could write a whole article on the benefits of facial cupping, but basically it improves the overall tone and health of your skin and takes just a few minutes.  I got my cups from LURE Essentials, and you can find lots of info about the treatment online.

Hydration and good diet

What we eat has a serious effect on the look and feel of our skin.  While I’m by no means suggesting a super strict diet, I do recommend being aware of foods that cause flare-ups.  For me, sugar has a huge impact on my skin, so I do my best to seriously reduce my intake.  Overall, a diet focused on whole, nutrient rich foods and lots of hydration is a major factor in having glowing skin!

This magical creation is loaded with raspberries, beet hummus, and Philosophie superfoods! I used the Green Dream Superfood + Protein Blend together with sweet + tart flavors of berries and beet for a beautiful flavor combination.

Beets are high in Vitamin-C, which I cannot stress enough during this time of the year. I also encourage you to drizzle on some Berry Bee Honey because of its immune boosting properties. I’m giving my boys a bit of it every morning to keep the cold away!

Thanks to the beautiful, Kara Elise and her amazing TOAST cookbook for the constant #ToastTuesday inspo. I love throwing my Philosophie touch and creating recipes like this Berry Beet Toast for all of you to enjoy as much as I did.

Heart of the Week: Magnesium/Salt Baths

We never have a true winter in LA, but nights get colder and sickness seems to go around so we know it’s winter. I love this season. I love snuggling with Kai + Leo in the early mornings or wrapping myself up in my blanket and sneaking in kisses from Adi. Most of all, I love being able to take the time to care for my own SELF. This pregnancy has been rough and because of it I’ve made self care and healing rituals a must. My favorite is a classic bath soak.

When I prepare to draw a bath, I like to create a calm environment and light candles, maybe play some soothing music, and prep my mind + soul. Sometimes I start with a meditation before and light Palo Santo or I’ll do a quicky yoga flow. Whatever makes your body feel good and relaxed!

In the bath, I use Philosophie Chrysalis Detox Bath Soak which works to open up your skin and draw out toxins, and sometimes I drop my favorite essential oils for calming aromas. I’ve also been obsessed with Naturally Vitality Calm which is loaded with magnesium. They make bath soak products or drinks if you’re in the mood for something to sip on while you cleanse.

Magnesium not only induces calmness, but helps improve skin hydration and decrease inflammation. It can also ease joint pain or muscle aches. This is so needed during a prenancy!

Magnesium Bath Recipe:

1-2 cups of Magnesium (I use Naturally Vitality Calm)

1/2 cup Chrysalis Detox Bath Soak

10-15 drops of essential oil of choice

Getting My Protein Fix w/ Orgain

While this post is sponsored by Orgain, these are 100% my opinions!

I’m beginning a magical 2018 with an intention to reconnect and reimagine all aspects of life. As a mama of two boys and a baby girl on the way, a wife, a friend, an entrepreneur I’m making it a point to practice self care and embrace challenges + opportunities that are coming my way. The only way I can reach the goals I set for myself is starting with a well-balanced diet. I love finding different ways to get my daily source of protein, vitamins, fruits and veggies. It’s such a win when I can find it from one convenient source. Orgain’s organic nutritional shakes are an easy shake on-the-go loaded with 16g of grass-fed protein, organic fruits + veggies, and 21 vitamins and minerals.

What I love most about this product is how beautifully it mixes with my Philosophie smoothies + lattes. It acts as a great base for my morning matcha, which is loaded with super filling protein (thanks to Orgain), nourishing fats from superfood coconut butters and an extra sweet boost from our raw, organic green dream honey. I’m energized and my body works on building lean muscle. It also supports healthy weight management. A huge plus, am I right?!

Other times, I use it as a water substitute in my smoothies. I’m a big fan of thick + creamy smoothies and using Orgain creates this perfect consistency every time. Kai and Leo love the taste of smoothie bowls with Orgain because it’s a little extra sweet, a lot more nourishing and fills their little bodies with quality ingredients I can trust!

I get so excited when I find a product that synergizes so well with Philosophie superfoods that I want to share it!
