On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree. Well, maybe not, but I would be super excited if he did, because pears are one of my favorite seasonal fruits! Not only are they juicy and delicious, they are also really good for you, too! The skin of the pear, which can range in color from bright yellow or green to deep reddish purple, contains high concentrations of phenolic phytonutrients, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may even have anti-cancer properties. The flesh of the pear and the skin, in particular, is rich in digestion-friendly, appetite-curbing fiber making pears a wonderful snack to enjoy if you’re trying to maintain a healthy weight. The flavonoids found in pears have also been linked to a decreased risk of Type 2 diabetes, particularly when eaten along with apples. Since pears are also very easy to digest, they are an ideal snack for anyone that tends to have a finicky stomach. On top of that, they are beautiful and can be used to add a bright pop of color to just about any dish!
Not sure how best to enjoy the healthy benefits of pears? Here are a few of my favorites ways to eat them!
In a Salad – Simply topping a delicate green salad with a few slices of pear is one way to add an eye-catching burst of sweet flavor, but if you’re really feeling bold, you might try making a salad out of chopped pears, cucumbers, and fennel a la Bon Appetit!
Poached – Simmer whole peeled pears in some sweet white wine with fragrant spices like cardamom or anise for about 30 minutes, and viola! You will have a beautiful, simple, and nourishing dessert!
Pureed – Pears have such a delicate texture that they are incredibly easy to puree. Add them to smoothies, use pureed pear to top a stack of gluten-free pancakes, or blend them with some Cacao Magic, vanilla, and almond butter to make a rich and chocolatey fruit juice!
Stuffed into a Sandwich – Throw some baby spinach, sliced pear, and a little veganaise mixed with a teaspoon of Berry Bliss Superfood + Protein powder, Berrybee Manuka Honey, and a pinch or two of mustard powder on some freshly toasted gluten-free or whole grain bread. Delish!
Roasted – Whether you let them stand alone or use them as a filling for a baked pie or raw crumble, pears are mind-bogglingly mouthwatering when allowed to caramelize in the oven!
Raw – The juicy flesh of fresh, seasonal pears is so tender and delicious that they are absolutely perfect as an easy, raw snack!
