I partnered with Kohl's for this post - they provided me these products but all opinions are my own. I only share products that I generally love to my readers.
Kai is going into his first year of kindergarten, I can’t believe it! He really is growing up. Kindergarten is a huge milestone. He’s experiencing his first backpack, his first packed lunch, his first “real” school.
Growing up, back-to-school shopping was one of my favorite parts of the year. You get to start the new school year off with a clean slate and new school supplies! This year, we got all of our school supplies at Kohl’s. Kai picked out this super rad crayon kit (which even came with the coolest crayon sharpener! Mind=blown!). He also got a magnetic calendar. It’s really fun for him because he can mark down his countdown to his first official day of school (August 24th!). It’s also great because he can keep track of his chores and responsibility goals. He’s just learning about the concept of managing time and scheduling, and it’s really helpful to have a visual in front of him. I also just love old-fashioned toys like this that the kids can interact with while being productive, without being glued to the screen of an iPad. He also loves doing workbooks and activity books, and that way we can make journaling not only a family activity, but a habit as well. Kai picked out all new notebooks and pens, which makes him even more excited to do his schoolwork!
A full day at school means that Kai needs lots of nourishing and energizing snacks to power him through. I make the process of packing the lunch itself an activity, because the kids have fun picking what they’re going to have the next day, and then they’re excited at lunchtime because they know exactly what they have to look forward to! It also builds a foundation of healthy habits and preparing healthy choices ahead of time. At this age, they are old enough to spread almond butter on bread for a sandwich and decide which healthy snacks they want to add. Give them tons of (healthy) options to choose from so they feel they are in control. Kai absolutely loves his new lunchbox! You can find loads of examples of packed lunch ideas to stay healthy and fulfilled, nourished here on our YouTube channel! Sometimes we just pack tons of snacks to make up a balanced meal. We love doing apple slices+Justin’s almond butter, Perfect Bars, hard-boiled eggs, and pressed juice. I always sneak in some Philosophie Superfoods too. I upgrade a ordinary PB&J by mixing the nut butter with Green Dream for some extra nutrients and protein! Sometimes we do classic turkey+hummus sandwiches on Canyon Gluten-Free bread...but again, I always let the kids choose.
I'm excited to let Kai pick out his own clothes. He’s growing SO fast, so I look for high quality clothes at a lower price point so I don’t feel too bad if they get dirty or he grows out of them too fast. Again, I buy the clothes I want to buy him and then he can make his own choices of what to wear. It’s interesting to see how even at such a young age, Kai and Leo have really distinct styles and tastes. While Leo loves his leopard print leggings, Kai can’t get enough of his polo and khaki shorts outfit! We will pick them out the night before so it makes mornings seamless and less hectic. While part of me wants my kids to never grow up, I'm so excited for Kai to experience this important and new chapter of his life!
