Wellness Chat with Noa Ries, Noa’s Perky Bum Workout, + a Pitaya Cherry Smoothie!

I  L O V E  chatting with mama entrepreneurs who are spreading their passion for wellness and learning about their journeys so I was super excited to swap stories + wellness tips with Noa Ries, a certified personal trainer and the founder of Vie Active (an incredibly cute fitness apparel line--I mean just check out these gorgeously marbled leggings!).

Sophie: Noa, I admire your energy and drive so much – you have built a business from the ground up, all while doing something you’re incredibly passionate about! Can you tell me a little about how you started Vie Active?

Noa: Thank you!! I grew up running and swimming laps at Bondi Beach, Australia with my father who taught me that “the body only does what the mind tells it to.” When he died very suddenly in 2008, working out became my therapy, and exercise quickly became more about sanity than vanity. The following year, I left my career in advertising to become a personal trainer. In February of 2012 at 4pm one afternoon, I had an epiphany when I realized I was still in my workout clothes, had not had time for a shower, and felt REALLY unstylish. I thought to myself–why do I have to make this conscious decision every day between being stylish and being fit? Surely I can be both! But as a modern woman (with two kids) I don’t have time for five outfit changes during the day. The following year, Vie Active was launched with a mission to truly fuse performance and style. Vie Active was designed to enable, empower, and inspire women to put their oxygen mask on first and realize the benefits of living an Active Life.

S: We're in a fresh, beautiful new year and many women have set intentions and goals centered around fitness. What are your tips for ensuring that these intentions stay present throughout the whole year, instead of dwindling away by early spring?

N: As modern women today, we work damn hard and we wear many hats at work (business owner, manager, leader, sales, marketing, product development… the list does not end) and at home (mother, wife, sister, friend, chef, chauffeur, counsellor, cleaner, etc.–you get the picture). But the problem with wearing all of these hats is that if you fall, those around you fall too. This is why it is critical and why at the start of this year instead of making New Years resolutions that you won’t keep past February, I think it's important to just focus on putting yourself first. Put Your Oxygen Mask on First (PYOMOF).

When you fly on an airplane, the flight attendant instructs you to put your oxygen mask on first, before helping others. Why is this an important rule for ensuring survival? Because if you run out of oxygen, you can’t help anyone else with their oxygen mask. This is an important metaphor for most modern women I know who run around taking care of everything and everyone else except themselves.

If you don’t take care of yourself, you can experience burnout, stress, fatigue, reduced mental effectiveness, health problems, anxiety, frustration, inability to sleep, and reduced happiness.  It’s time to let go of the guilt and the excuses, and put your oxygen mask first by making your own health and fitness a non-negotiable investment in your own well-being.

S: You're a marathon runner + triathlete! What motivates you to workout rain or shine? And what tips do you have for anyone looking to make sure that their workouts absolutely happen (instead of giving in to sleeping in or skipping the gym for brunch)?

I workout for sanity more than vanity and while life certainly does get in the way (I have two kids and a startup business), I try to workout 3-5 x every week. I know that if I do this, I will be so much happier, more energetic, and more focused and productive. I schedule in my workouts in advance much like my meetings so I can plan out my week. My ideal week would have me working out 5 times a week, but often life gets in the way (kids are sick, I have an early call, or meeting) and so I only get 3-4 in. I know myself well enough to know that if I don’t work out at least twice in one week, everything and everyone around me suffers.

S: I've always found that work-out sessions with my husband, Adi, or my friends are the most fun. Any advice on how to inspire friends, sisters, mamas, hubbies–anyone really–to join you on a run, spin sesh, or yoga flow?

N: I think "sweat-working" is the new networking! There are SO many different types of workouts now, and I am all about killing two birds with one stone so I love catching up with my friends or family for a workout. If I want to chat, I'll do a hike or bike ride. If it's more about just having fun together, then we will head to Body By Simone or Soulcycle together.

S: How do you create balance between being an entrepreneur and a mother, while still finding time for self-care?

N: I think work/life/balance is a total fallacy, and if you keep striving for it you end up feeling like a failure. It's impossible to have 8 neat hours of life, work, and rest each day. I know that every day I am going to be compromising one of the areas in my life, but I just try to focus on the positive, know that I am doing my best, and treat myself kindly. I think health and fitness are the best investment in anyone's wellbeing and the flow on effect for everyone and everything else in your life is huge.

N: Sophie, how did you get started in the health & fitness industry and what sparked the idea to found your own company and wellness brand?

S: Philosophie began with me simply wishing that I could have an amazing blend of superfoods and proteins together in one, convenient jar. I didn’t want to run out of camu camu or another individual ingredient and then feel like my smoothie wasn’t complete, so I went all over LA searching for high quality, fair-trade, organic superfoods and then began packing them into mason jars and little bags. I started giving the blends to friends and family and making everyone workout and nutrition guides. One day, I was in the sea in Israel with my husband, Adi, and he turned to me and said, “You should really grow what you’re doing and share it with more people, make it a company.” And since that day, Philosophie has blossomed into something much bigger than I had ever imagined. Our products have helped everyone from George Clooney to my own dad and are continuing to help so many more people discover wellness and feel as vibrant + alive as they can.

N: Through your holistic approach to wellbeing, how do you live an active life and what is your favorite way to stay fit?

S: I love awakening to a morning of intention setting followed by a yoga flow, either at home with my kiddies or at the studio. The rush of a good spin or kickboxing sesh and the beauty and serenity of an outdoor hike or walk also does wonders!

N: Being both an entrepreneur and a mother can cause for a busy schedule. What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

S: I love a relaxing Thai massage, swinging by Venice to visit all of my beautiful soul sisters, and then closing the day with something simple, maybe taking an evening stroll in nature, and then having a movie night with my hubby + the kids!

N: As a raw food chef What is your favorite healthy dish to make?

S: I love a powerhouse post-workout salad! After a hard sweat sesh, I’ll toss together mixed leafy greens, fermented turnips, kimchi, sprouted pumpkin seeds, tahini, garlic, and pesto—it’s super nourishing and oh-so-yummy!

N: We love your idea of creating an easier, more inspiring way to maintain health and wellness. What does living a healthy and active life mean to you?

S: Doing everything from a place of love—which means working out because I actually love the movements that I’m having my body do, or eating because I love how the food tastes and how it makes me feel. The moment you do something that’s “good for you” without having any passion for it is the moment you lose your glow. So it’s simple—find recipes for nourishing dishes you can’t wait to make,  buy or make natural, non-toxic beauty products that smell and feel amazing, or sign up for a workout class that is the highlight of your day.

After Noa’s hard sweat sesh, I love whipping up this rejuvenating + oh-so-yummy smoothie! Pitaya (also known as dragonfruit) is packed with vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium (a key mineral that promotes healthy bones and muscles!), and the anti-inflammatory cherries prevent post-workout muscle aches and pains. Toss in a spoonful of Berry Bliss for an added boost of plant-based protein and a powerhouse blend of organic acai, goji, pomegranate, camu camu, mangosteen, and maca!

Heart of the Week: Adi, My Love

People often ask me how, after being lied to and manipulated, I found trust again in my relationship with Adi. Trust is not easy to come by and in any relationship it can make or break you. Trusting a friend, family member and partner is even more difficult to achieve when the things creating it have been broken. Difficult, but not impossible.

If you haven’t read about our history, read an article here that recaps most of it.

I wanted to take the time today to share some tangible steps to rekindling your trust and more important, your love.

  1. BOUNDARIES. Boundaries are an incredible way to communicate your needs, which also give your partner a chance to prove him/herself. If he/she has cheated or lied to you, they need a safe space to work in. Our boundaries are ever-evolving and changing. In the beginning, boundaries with Adi were very restricted, so much so that he couldn’t speak to other women, have friends that were women or go out for drinks with male friends. Over time, as he proved himself by continuously telling the truth and live within the boundaries made me trust him (slowly) and feel safe. Now you wouldn’t believe the boundaries we have in place and how free we are. It’s truly a miracle, but we continued to show up to each other and the work, and here we are!

  1. COUPLES THERAPY/GROUPS.  I can’t say enough about healing and therapeutic connection. From individual therapy, to couples therapy, to therapy groups, we did it ALL and continue to maintain a healthy attendance. Adi went to a therapist several hours a week when everything first fell apart. We also went to a couples therapist and I saw an individual therapist. Find someone you really love. If you can’t afford therapy, find something in your community that’s more affordable. For the first 4 years we saw a sliding scale therapist and on average we paid about $40 a session (significantly less than most therapists). You can also connect with other people in your community going through similar issues. If you like 12 steps, there are tons of supportive 12 step groups out there. If you don’t, there are tons of other types of amazing groups that will be practically family by the time you’re finished.

  1. TIME. Time is something we can’t control and always wish we could speed up. Several times in my journey with Adi I would say, “Okay, I trust you! I’m not jealous anymore!” and try and will myself into believing I was okay. I WASN’T OK. I wasn’t ready. And you can’t fake it! Focus on the first two steps, and as you continue to engulf yourself into the work together, you will find that time is passing and you feel slightly better. Week by week, month by month, you will be growing closer and more connected. You will have a new relationship that looks way different than when you started, and that’s a good thing.


BONUS: ABSOLUTE transparency and willingness from your partner. WHATEVER it TAKES. And I mean, WHATEVER IT TAKES. It may seem insane or crazy but if it makes you feel better and makes you feel like you know deep down what your partner is saying is true, then make it happen. Example: FaceTime set on an iPad when traveling in a hotel room; having locations set on his/her phone so you know their constant whereabouts; telling the other about thoughts as well as real flirtations or encounters with others. This can be really triggering for people initially and feels really scary but I promise you, time after time, it will get easier.

Philosophie Babe Recipe: Berry Cacao Smoothie

I am so blessed with all these amazing women around me who inspire me every day! Philosophie BABE, Caroline from Caroline’s Kitchen created a sweet, nutritional afternoon pick-me-up with our superfood blends. Super easy and extra energizing!

I'm always looking for fun, creative ways to combine flavors and Caroline's recipe does just that. Berries and chocolate – need I say any more? The tartness of berries with the richness of chocolate makes for a powerful combination! 

This smoothie is packed with superfoods including fiber rich ground flax and antioxidant filled cacao powder. For protein, combine Philosophie Cacao Magic and Berry Bliss superfood powders, which are each packed with goodness of their own like reishi, maca, and camu camu.


Gather This:

1 handful spinach

½ banana

½ cup frozen berries (I love using blueberries and raspberries)

½ cup steamed + frozen cauliflower

1 tbsp ground flax

2 tsp Philosophie Cacao Magic

2 tsp Philosophie Berry Bliss

1 tbsp cashew butter

1 cup almond milk

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp cacao powder


Do This:

Place all the ingredients in a high speed blender and blend until thick, creamy, and smooth. You may need to stop and scrape the sides a few times. Drink as is or top with your favorite toppings–I'm a huge fan of cacao nibs and extra nut butter. Enjoy!

Green Dream Avocado Toast Recipe

Isn’t it wonderful that avocados seem to always be in season? In California, we’re truly blessed. Avocados have an especially long growing season that lasts from February through September. For the other few months, they're imported from our neighbors.

Avocado toast has become a California staple and I’m still a fan. These nutrient-dense veggies are made up of about 20 vitamins and minerals from Vitamin K to Vitamin C. Take the traditional avocado toast and combine it with Green Dream Superfood Blend for an added superfood punch. Top with feta cheese, nuts and sundried tomatoes for a bit of extra pizzazz and flavor.

Gather This:

1 slice of Canyon House Gluten Free Bread (or favorite bread of your choice)

1 small Avocado

1 tbsp Feta Cheese

A handful of chopped sundried tomatoes

1 tbsp of pine nuts

1 tsp Green Dream

Do this:

While the bread is toasting, mash 1 avocado in a bowl with 1 tsp of green dream, spread avo mixture on the bread and top with feta, chopped tomatoes, pine nuts, and a sprinkling of added green dream!

When it comes to confronting the word “emotion” where does one begin? Most likely we start in that fun, comfortable place. The place where feelings like happiness, excitement and love pervade our very being. But as we all know, that’s not always reality. When times like this come rolling in, it can be hard to get out of your own way.

Through this work readers are taught to mindfully embrace imperfections, develop courage, and ultimately acknowledge that they are enough- regardless of situation, obstacle or circumstance.

As a leading expert on shame, authenticity, and belonging, Brown has been featured in Oprah Winfrey’s daytime series SuperSoul Sunday, as well as internationally recognized for her viral 2010 TED talk entitled “The Power of Vulnerability.” If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check it out here. Simple Mills Superfood Banana Pancakes Recipe

Can I listen to Jack Johnson and make these fluffy, superfood banana pancakes every morning?! I LOVE lazy mornings with my kiddos and husband, and many of those mornings are centered around our breakfasts. I try to add a bit of nutritional value to all of my meals, even if I sneak in a little chocolate or indulge in some sweets. These Simple Mills Superfood Banana Pancakes are perfect for any family breakfast and full of nutritional sweetness!

Simple Mills really know what they’re doing with their amazing pancake & waffle mix. Made up of almond flour, coconut flour & coconut sugar for added nutrients and entirely gluten-free. Did I mention it's also free of soy, corn, dairy & gum/emulsifiers? This just means you can eat about 5 to 10 and not feel like a balloon. Mixed with Berry Bliss Superfood Powder and topped with Green Bee Honey for an extra immune boost (a huge plus during the cold season), you’d think you can hardly call these pancakes, but that first bite will tell you differently.

Gather This:

1 box of Simple Mills Banana Muffin Mix (used for pancakes)

1 large Banana (chopped)

1 tsp Berry Bliss Powder

1 tbsp Grass Fed Butter

1 Tsp Green Bee Honey

1 tbsp Coconut Oil

2 Tbsp Shredded Coconut

Fresh Organic Berries

Do This:

Follow instructions for the pancakes on the back of the Simple Mills box, but add chopped banana and 1 tsp of Berry Bliss Superfood Powder to the batter for extra goodness. Warm ½ tsp coconut oil in a pan on the stove. Add batter and cook for 3 minutes or so on each side. Top with grass fed butter, a drizzle a bit of Green Bee Honey, a sprinkle of shredded coconut and fresh berries!
