Cleansing and Yom Kippur Fast

No matter your "religion", you can't help but feel a shift in the air during this time of year. We are moving from summer to fall and with that comes the Virgo moon. We spend less time outdoors and in the sun absorbing energy, and more time indoors expending energy. We get to "work". In the fall there comes a giving back and turning inward, making changes and reflection on what is working and what just isn't.

With the approaching Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, comes a certain holy energy and experience for ALL of newness and reflection. Last week was Rosh Hashana which is translated literally as "head of the new year" and it always falls on the new moon. I love that the new year in Judaism is followed by the "days of awe" which are days of reflection and awareness until Yom Kippur.

It's not a coincidence that I scheduled a cleanse to begin this week for Philosophie lovers...it's to work in complete synergy with the universal energy we are surrounded by. It really helps us to become more aware and introspective when we are fasting or cleansing the body. Every step we take we are aware of, every move we make is with intention.

I saw Marianne Williamson speak on Monday evening, something I try to do often as a gift to myself. I feel so lucky that she speaks once a week 5 minutes away from where I live. She said that Rosh Hashana is the day "the books are written" and Yom Kippur is the day "the books are sealed". I thought this was such a beautiful, profound notion.

Going Inward

Take out a piece of paper or a journal and go within yourself. Think about anyone you may want to forgive or connect with. Consider letting go of something or someone that isn't serving you any longer. As you free up the space from things that aren't serving you, you allow room for newness and a rebalancing of the best you possible.

Be OPEN to anything!

Maca - Immune boosting adaptogen that increases energy, sexual drive, and stamina.

maca-root

Maca is a plant with a radish-like root that is used as a food and for medicinal purposes. Although maca is unrelated to the ginseng family, it has been dubbed "Peruvian ginseng" because it is used as a folk remedy to increase stamina, energy, and sexual drive.

Maca improves both male and female hormone balance, supports the adrenals, increases stamina, helps with erectile dysfunction and increases sex-drive and fertility! I would start with a teaspoon a day in a smoothie and increase up to 4 teaspoons a day. Read on to read more details!!

Maca-an Adaptogen

In the 1930s, Russian scientists studying plant medicine coined the term adaptogen to refer to a plant that promoted non specific benefits to an organism while inducing NO negative side effects.

An adaptogen is a substance which raises the non-specific resistance in an organism. Adaptogens enable the body to enhance its power of resistance and adapt to external conditions. They work with the body's natural rhythms to help rebuild weak immune systems, re-mineralize poorly nourished bodies, and increase energy and endurance.

The endocrine system is a collection of glands that produce chemical "messengers" called hormones essential for normal bodily functions. A wide variety of physiological processes are carried out unconsciously by these "messengers". Once released they flow directly into the bloodstream and are transported to organs and tissues throughout the entire body.

Scientists and doctors are now finding maca to be one of the best natural ways to regulate and support endocrine health. This action regulates metabolism, energy levels, growth, sexual development and the sense of well being and attitude.

Thankfully, maca does not contain hormones itself. Instead it provides a unique set of nutrients that directly fuel the endocrine system and help the glands to produce vital hormones in precise dosages predetermined by one's own body.

Sexual drive and fertility

According to folklore, ancient Incan warriors took maca before going off to battle to make them physically strong. However, they were later prohibited from taking it, in order to protect conquered women from their heightened libidos.

One study looked at the effect of 4 months treatment with maca tablets on semen quality in nine adult men. Treatment with maca resulted in increased seminal volume, sperm count, and sperm motility. A 12-week randomized controlled trial looked at 1,500 mg maca, 3,000 mg maca, or placebo. After 8 weeks, there was an improvement in sexual desire in the men taking maca.

So why does maca feel so good?

Personally, because I eat a primarily vegan diet, my body is somewhat low in iron and B vitamins. Although I eat as many plant based foods that contain iron and B vitamins, sometimes I need to take an iron and B vitamin supplement. I find that the days I have maca I don't need to supplement with the vitamins (OR COFFEE!)  because my body feels nourished. As an adaptogen, maca works broadly to contribute to overall well being. It nourishes and calms the nerves with calcium, phosphorus, vitamins B1 and B12 , and fatty acids, all of which work beneficially on the nervous system.

I would experiment, just like any other superfood or food, and try it each day for a few weeks and see how you feel. In my experience with maca, the best way to tell if it's affecting you is to take it away after some time.

Maca comes in pill form or is ground into powder. I include maca powder in many of my own smoothies, and in those of my clients when they are doing a cleanse or raw-life experience.

*I would avoid maca if you are on birth control.

Here's a video that includes some info about maca AND a recipe to use it in! (you can add it to anything, start with 1 tsp and work your way up!)

Cacao Magic Fiber Breakfast Cookies! Gluten-free & vegan

Fiber breakfast cookies with Cacao Magic

You know how you’ve heard people say “eat dark chocolate” for antioxidants and abundant health? Yeah, that’s because of UNPROCESSED, RAW, VEGAN Chocolate… CACAOCacao powder is chocolate in it’s most raw and nutritious form. The Philosophie Cacao Magic has Cacao nibs, Cacao powder, Tocos (Vitamin E- good for skin and nails), Mesquite (high in iron & protein), Maca (good for energy & balancing mood) and 3 medicinal mushrooms that are excellent for anti-aging, preventing cancer* and healing the body.

WET INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup chopped prunes or prune puree*
  • 1/4 cup sweetener (such as maple, brown rice or agave syrups)
  • 1/4 cup apple sauce
  • 1/4 cup nut butter (such as almond, pumpkin seed or tahini)
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 egg or 1/2 ripe banana
  • 1 tsp vanilla

DRY INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup whole grain flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1/2 cup psyllium
  • 1/2 cup ground flax
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup or more of nuts, seeds, trail mix, or chopped dried fruit
  • 2 TBL or more of Philosophie Cacao Magic

*to give them a sweeter taste, you could add chocolate chips!

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Place chopped prunes in a blender and just cover with boiling water. Let soak while you prepare the dry ingredients. Also, lightly oil a large baking sheet and preheat oven to 350.
  2. Measure all dry ingredients into a large bowl and mix well. Measure all wet ingredients into the blender with the soaked prunes (do not drain), then liquify and stir into dry ingredients, combining well. Drop batter by the heaping tablespoon onto the greased cookie sheet and flatten just a bit with wet fingers or the back of a wet spoon. Bake for 15 minutes. Make sure you have a glass of water or cup of tea with each cookie. Makes about 20 cookies.

This recipe makes the cookies slightly crunchy on the outside. For a softer cookie double the amount of prune puree and apple sauce. This will make them almost muffin-like.

Enjoy!

Tasty Kale Juice

When taking the first sip of this green juice, you may be shocked that it tastes so refreshing, clean and delicious! It's so light, almost like a green colored lemonade! Give it a go!

This is an incredibly healthy, refreshing way to start your day. Kale is full of calcium and antioxidants and just about everything else—it’s one of the best things you can put into your system. Kale and other green vegetables are super alkalizing for your system, and therefore helps to cleanse the body. When juiced with a bit of lemon and agave, kale turns into a sort-of grassy lemonade.

No worries if you don’t have a juicer, a blender and a sieve do the trick.

  • 1 bunch of organic kale, stems removed and leaves washed
  • 1 green apple, juiced
  • the juice of 2 small lemons
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons of agave nectar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup cold, filtered water

Combine everything in a blender and blend until completely pureed. It might take a little bit of time and manpower to get it going. Strain the juice through a fine sieve or colander into a bowl, pushing down on the solids with a kitchen spoon being sure to extract all the juice. Taste the juice and add a bit more lemon or agave if you think it needs it. Pour into a glass and drink up!

Superfoods: what are they and what are the health benefits?

What are superfoods?

Superfood is a term sometimes used to describe food with high phytonutrient content that may provide health benefits as a result. For example, blueberries are often considered a superfood (or superfruit) because they contain significant amounts of antioxidants,, vitamin C, manganese, and dietary fiber. You don't need specific foods for specific ailments. A healthy diet incorporating a variety of the following superfoods will help you maintain your weight, fight disease, and live longer. One thing they all have in common: Every superfood is going to be a 'real' (unprocessed) food, you don't find fortified potato chips in the superfood category.

How can I use and incorporate superfoods in my daily life?

if you click on the words above I offer other posts I've written with more info about the wonderful superfoods and also a few recipes to use them in!

All of my superfood blends have all the best superfoods in one place. No need to purchase them all separately, just buy one bag instead of 8!

The Green Dream superfoods have chia seeds, maca, mesquite (high in iron), tocos, spirulina, hemp powder and fresh vanilla bean.

Our Berry Bliss superfood blend has camu camu (top antioxidant food in the world), pomegranate, acai (combats stress), goji (prevents heart disease) organic whey protein (recovery & rejuvenation-very clean protein source) tocos (improves digestion, glowing skin & strong nails from Vitamin E) camu camu (immunity) and mangosteen (antibiotic & anti-fungal).

the Yummiest Superfood Yet ... Dark Chocolate

Research has shown that dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. It's recommended that you look for chocolate with 60% or higher cocoa content; the darker, the better! In addition, the darker it is, the lower the fat and sugar content. Now that's my kind of health food!

here are two recipes using dark chocolate/cacao (chocolate in it's most raw form):
