Sacred Pause // Time After Birth

Third trimester and feeling it all. Adi and I are so excited to welcome our newest Jaffe member into this world. This spring has been all about the transition and preparation from a family of four to a family of five.

I had a consultation with an amazing postpartum Ayurvedic doula, Jenna Furnari. She was gentle, understanding and so helpful as I prepare for the arrival of our baby girl.

Here’s a look at my transition into labor/birth and the plan for when baby girl arrives. As always, thank you for being a beautiful community that allows me to share in this space.

TRANSITION

As I progress through the third trimester of this little angel's pregnancy, I am starting to prepare mentally, emotionally and physically for what's to come.

We are preparing our home, making sacred space for baby girl, clearing out what we no longer need, and getting everything organized for the boys. I am working with the brilliant Dany from Spatial Soulutions who really understands our home and the inner workings of a mother (she was a preschool teacher for years). Taylor has also been helping us get organized and prepared by helping me pack my hospital bag, ordering candles for the birth, and making sure all our ducks are in a row.

I’ve held a couple new moon circles with my soul sisters. Welcoming in sacred, positive energy and clearing out the old, stagnant air. I’ve focused on a full mind + body connection as I work to create a magnetic and welcoming home for baby girl.

Watch my YouTube video for more about my third trimester of this pregnancy.

THE PLAN

My plan for postpartum is starting to become more clear. Since my life is so chaotic and FULL of beauty, work, passion and magic, I need to really set intentions that surround what I want to create.

I want to take a full month to bond with baby girl. Both in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, they promote taking a full month to 40 days to really heal and connect to this new chapter in your life.

I will be continuing to work with Jenna Furnari. She will be working with me two days a week for around 5 hours each session. During the days she is with me, she will help prepare Ayurvedic nourishing foods, help me with emotional and physical recovery, support me in breastfeeding, babywearing, and spending time with baby so I can rest. She will also do Ayurvedic birth recovery bodywork and help with the transition for the entire household to adjust to new roles (this will be very important for Kai and Leo).

She will make us lists of what to purchase and then we will get all our groceries and stock the fridge so she can come and help prepare nourishing foods for me. She has mapped out a food plan for everything from the first 24 hours that includes warmed/spiced milk and panchakola ghee to 3 days postpartum that includes stuffed dates, stewed fruits, Mama Chai tea, and Lactation Tea. She’ll also be delivering to the hospital for the first day or two. The time after having a baby needs to be nourishing as the body has undergone extreme trauma giving birth and the 9 months of growing the babe. I'm excited for a slow, mindful recovery.

During these 40 days we will only allow our inner circle family and close friends into our home. This will be a sacred time full of love, bonding, sweetness, recovery and intimate moments.

I'm so grateful Adi works from home now and will be on summer break from teaching at UCLA so he can be really present to this new addition into our world. Kai and Leo will be at a sports camp close by so they will be happy and exhausted when they get home and I can really get the time I want with this sweet baby.

Jenna sees clients virtually via phone and skype, if you would like to schedule a pregnancy consult with her pre or postnatal! I highly suggest it, she's an absolute angel.

Did you take a sacred pause after giving birth? If you're pregnant, are you planning on doing something like this? Would love to hear from you!! Please share x

Yes! I did this with both my boys! It’s really sweet and so good for healing your body. I love the book, The First Forty Days, and it supported me in making food before baby came. I spent the first 2 weeks literally only in bed, and then stayed home or close to home after that.
So glad you’re doing this and writing about it so women know it’s an option for them, rather than sprinting back into life right away. Our bodies need to time to heal and recover! Xx

I did sweet love. I took 40 days to bond and it was just my husband and I. Visitors that came brought food and left it at the door, or came to clean. It was amazing.

Thinking of you so much. I feel so much love energy your way. Hugs

Heart of the Week: Prenatal Yoga Flow

It’s a funny thing, every pregnancy I’ve had has been remarkably different from each other. While I was Kai at 25/26 years old, I was vibrant, full of energy, didn't show for awhile and hardly had aches or pains until the third trimester. I loved doing power yoga and was practicing right up til the week I went into labor. With Leo, I was way more mellow and often preferred hiking and walking. This pregnancy has been a whole new level. I was achy WAY sooner and the pains I experienced in my third trimester with Kai and Leo I experienced within the first few months. Now, in my third trimester, all I want to do is walk and stretch.

These prenatal yoga poses have been my favorite and are fine for ALL trimesters. I’ve found it helps to bring ease to your body and offers the space to connect with the little being inside of you. Savor it.

While flowing, remember to connect to your babe. Use both hands on your womb and repeat much you love, appreciate, and can't wait to meet him or her. Connect to their little spirit; maybe you feel the little kicks, hiccups, or movement. You can go through these poses once or several times, depending on how you're feeling and how much time you have.

Benefits of Prenatal Yoga:

Soothes your nervous system

Connects you to baby in a sacred space

Tips for an easy + comfortable prenatal flow:

Sign up for a class with other mamas-to-be and really get a sense of sisterhood and community

Enjoy a solo sesh in the comforts of your home -- create a welcoming space with candles, palo santo or sweet grass, aromatherapy, and comfortable clothes or maybe even no clothes

Block out all other distractions and take the time to connect with your body and with baby

Listen to your body -- if a pose is uncomfortable then don't do it

Heart of the Week: Micuna

As I’m nearing the end of my pregnancy, I have been preparing our home to welcome our newest Jaffe member. Spring cleaning has taken on a whole new meaning in our home as we make it baby ready. It also means I get to stock up on baby clothes, accessories, products and furniture. It’ve always wanted a baby girl and to raise one in an age where I can find products that truly align with my values is all the more special.

One brand I’ve been loving is Micuna. I’ve been blessed with finding the right furniture for our new home and this was the same for finding pieces for little babe. Micuna has the modern touch I adore and all their products are eco-friendly and completely safe for baby.

We got a BEAUTIFUL Harmony Crib that has a super clean, minimal touch. It truly aligns with everything I’m about at this point in my life. It felt like it belonged in her room. The fun part about this crib is that it transforms into a twin bed so she’ll grow with it.

I also have one of their Ovo High Chairs, which is so perfect. I can’t wait to use it. It looks so beautiful like a piece of art. This piece also transforms into a toddler chair! I love the versatility of these products.

As I’m prepping our home and buying all this baby girl will need, I’m taking the time to take extra care of myself, Endless naps, baths and family snuggles. Meditation and tea are nightly rituals, as is rubbing my belly with natural, organic belly creams and spending time with little angel. Much more of this is in my future and I’m so ready.
