Coconut Oil: Friend or Foe?

The wellness world was turned upside down this past month when the American Heart Association announced that coconut oil is a no-no for heart health. As we at Philosophie HQ have a love affair with coconut oil, I felt it was important to chime in on this debate. Like most issues today, every expert has a different opinion, and I wanted to share with you ours.

Bottom line: There are healthy fats and there are unhealthy fats. Coconut oil is abundant in medium chain triglycerides (called MCTs) that deliver immediate energy because the body quickly turns them into fuel, which means that this oil is NOT stored as fat. Coco oil is a fat that is MUCH easier for your body to digest, as well as anti-fungal and anti-microbial. There are so many benefits to consuming coconut oil, and they’re all backed by studies.

We all know the buzz word “anti-inflammatory,” but did you know that the start of almost all chronic disease stems from inflammation in the body? It’s so important to adopt an anti-inflammatory diet to protect your insides and your overall health, and consuming coconut oil on the reg helps you do just that!

The AHA also claimed that there were “no known offsetting favorable effects.” On the contrary, research shows that fats in coconut oil can actually decrease risk factors for heart attack and strokes! Coco oil PREVENTS the hardening and thickening that happens to your arteries when you are about to suffer from a heart attack or stroke. Obesity is another major issue in our country, and coconut oil actually helps speed up your metabolism, as well as reduces your appetite.

I think it's important to note that the AHA was basing their inaccurate conclusions about coconut oil on studies that were conducted 50 years ago! The wellness industry is constantly changing, but one thing that remains the same is the incredible benefits of coco oil when it’s used properly.

We love to cook and bake with coco oil, we use it as a hair mask, as an eye makeup remover, in smoothies, and in bulletproof coffee–most importantly, of course! I personally rely on it to help strengthen my weakened gut lining in my stomach, due to food sensitivities! It also acts as a moisturizer for your body, and helps heal wounds. What can this superfood NOT do?

Knowledge is power, Philosophie Tribe! Arming yourself with accurate and current information is key in staying on top of your wellness game!

Hummus Spiralized Veggie Platter

Sometimes I don't really feel like making a “normal” dinner. All I want is veggies - both raw and roasted - compiled into a meal. If you like your spiralized zucchini sautéed, feel free to sautée them for 2-3 min over medium heat with 1 tsp coconut oil. Sometimes I want them sautéed, other times I like the refreshing raw crunch. It's a personal preference! We have a beet hummus recipe that's out of this world if you want to make your own, if not, we love Hope hummus and garlic majestic brands.

Gather This:

1 cup Hummus

1 Roasted Sweet Potato

1 Spiralized Zucchini + 1 Yellow Squash

Fried Banana

Handful of Organic Blueberries

1 handful of Kale

1 tsp Green Dream

Hemp Hearts

EVOO+Salt // Pepper

Do This:

Slice and Roast the sweet potato in the oven on 400 degrees for 20 minutes. While that roasts, spiritualize the vegetables and dress with Salt+Pepper. Slice a banana quarter size and fry in Coconut Oil, for 2 minutes on each side. Chop the kale and saute for 4 minutes in Coconut Oil. Spread out the hummus on the platter, layer the sweet potato, add on fried bananas, pile on the spiralized veggies, sprinkle the blueberries, kale, a drizzle of EVOO, Salt, Pepper and Green Dream!

Cacao Magic Cheesecake

Who else is feelin’ some cacao today? Yes, please. This variation of a vegan cheesecake is extra delish and packed with yummy goodness for your body and soul. Your food palette doesn’t need to suffer when you’re making smart and BALANCED food choices. Never say no to a sweet fix and your body will be thanking you for this one.

Our Cacao Magic Cheesecake makes 24 slivers of a large pie or 4 smaller pies with 6 slices. We used a food processor for easy prep, but you can make it work with what you have on hand.

Gather this:

For the Crust

2 cups raw macadamia nuts OR a blend of almonds, walnuts and pecans

1/2 cup dates, pitted

1/4 cup dried coconut

For the “Cheese”

3 cups chopped cashews, soaked for at least 1 hour

3/4 cup lemon juice (or lime juice-i used limequats for this! so yum)

3/4 cup honey (Use the Philosophie Cacao Bee Honey for a touch of nutrients!)

3/4 cup coconut oil

1 tbsp Cacao Magic

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon celtic sea salt (optional)

For the Topping

A sprinkling of Cacao Magic followed by:

Halved and whole fruit (we used blueberries, strawberries, and white dragon fruit; flower petals are a bonus)

Do this:

To make the crust, process the nuts and dates in the food processor. Sprinkle dried coconut onto the bottom of an 8 or 9 inch springform pan. Press crust onto the coconut. This will prevent it from sticking.

To make the cheese, blend the cashews, Cacao Magic, lemon juice, Cacao Bee honey, gently warmed coconut oil, vanilla, sea salt, and 1/2 cup water. Blend until smooth and adjust to taste.

Pour the mixture onto the crust. Remove air bubbles by tapping the pan on a table.

Place in the freezer until firm. Remove the whole cake from the pan while frozen and place on a serving platter. Defrost in the refrigerator. (the more defrosted the better the taste)

Place fruits/toppings as you'd like and ENJOY!

A DIY Philosophie Facial for Glowing Skin

As we've spent the summer playing in the sun and are now entering the cold air of fall + winter, it's time to give our skin some much-needed love + care. This week, carve out half an hour for a healing, detoxifying at-home facial that includes a Green Dream Mask, a Berry Bee Mask, and a nourishing Chrysalis Mist + Facial Oil. While you're letting the superfoods work their magic on your skin, relax in a Chrysalis Detox Bath to get the full-on spa experience. Afterwards, we promise you'll look + feel like a radiant goddess ♥
.
Step 1: Draw a Chrysalis Detox Bath
In contrast to what you see at your local health food store, the Chrysalis Soak is not your mother's bath salts. This combo of sea salt, baking soda, grapeseed oil, and essential oils work together to open your skin and draw sluggish toxins out of your system, all while you're relaxing in a fragrant, skin-softening bath.
.
Step 2: Create a Green Dream Face Mask
Mix our Green Dream Superfood + Protein Blend with water to create a thin paste and apply gently to your face so it can beautify your skin for 10-15 minutes. Spirulina, the star ingredient in Green Dream, brightens skin, combats free radicals, and helps reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles!
.
Step 3: Apply a Berry Bee Face Mask
This one's super simple! Just scoop out a spoonful of our healing, superfood-infused honey, apply it to your face, and let sit for another 10 minutes before rinsing off. We absolutely love honey for its healing, antibacterial properties. This golden liquid contains an abundance of minerals, vitamins, natural enzymes, and antioxidants that'll make your skin oh-so-healthy + beautiful.
.
Step 4: Mist Your Face with Our Chrysalis Water
A high concentration of acid-balancing witch hazel in our Chrysalis Water makes it a moisturizing miracle for skin, while the energetic flower essences renew the mind + spirit!
.
Step 5: Apply a Chrysalis Face Oil

This healing oil acts as moisture balancer, problem skin solution, and anti-aging miracle.  It conditions and softens the skin while clearing up irritation, dissolving sebum in clogged pores, reducing wrinkles, AND firming the skin by boosting collagen production.
