Hi loves! As we end a beautiful October month, I wanted to share a little note on an important aspect of this past month. Besides the pumpkin patches, costumes and endless sweets + treats, October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s so important to me because breast cancer has deeply affected my life. My mom is a survivor of stage four breast cancer.
Though I’m continuously reminded how strong + inspirational my mom is and I’ll always do what I can to help fight the battle for ending breast cancer, but taking the time to share her story is important and part of my role as her daughter.
My incredible, beautiful, inspiring mother Phyllis, is a major impact on my life and Philosophie. She braved a huge battle with stage four breast cancer, and during that time, I was by her side for all of her treatments, hair loss, and pain. She used a mixture of western and eastern modalities of healing and was seeing a Chinese doctor during this time. He recommended the medicinal mushroom, Reishi, which I later integrated into Cacao Magic Superfood + Protein Blend. My mother is now on the “other side” and healthier than ever. Her experience has been a major lesson within my own life and has served as major inspiration to my superfoods, which I created to help people feel well-nourished, balanced and the best version of themselves. I feel so honored I’m able to share her story on this platform. It’s why I do what I do!
I’ve shared her story before, but I think it’s good to resurface so I can allow others to connect with this healing and serve as a reminder that this battle is not over. Not even close. As a sign of support, my amazing Philosophie family has put together a donation page to help fight to end breast cancer. If you feel called to, donate what you can at here. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
My Mother’s Fight w/ Breast Cancer
She felt a lump under her left breast for about a year. She and my dad were in denial and waited as long as possible to go get it checked.
She finally went to see a radiologist two weeks after her mother passed away. Indeed, it was a tumor and it metastasized and spread to her liver and lymph nodes. We were shocked. We didn’t know how to move forward. My best friend from childhood died that year as well, so I felt as though my world was falling apart. I didn’t understand how all of this could be happening.
During her treatment, she dramatically shifted her eating habits. She saw a Chinese doctor who taught her all about relaxation + meditation and more importantly, how to incorporate healthy foods, Chinese herbs, and superfoods into her diet. Every evening she would drink a special herbal tea meant to heal her body from the inside out. I was so inspired by this that I created Cacao Magic which includes the medicinal mushroom, Reishi. Reishi Mushroom has been used for centuries to heal people and is also known as “The Mushroom of Immortality.” I did more research than ever before during the time she had cancer, in order to get to know the magical world of medicinal herbs and started using them myself.
My mom began to prioritize her SELF first, her needs, wants, her families, and close friends. She has more fun now than she ever did before cancer. She’s also told me that she has a “reset button” that she sets to positive every day. She now harbors zero guilt for others and has learned the importance of BALANCE + acceptance.
Her biggest advice? “Don’t wait until it’s too late to get a screening.” Take matters into your own hands.
I truly believe that although she did get chemo and radiation, that the healing food (she now adds more vegan food and superfoods into her daily diet than ever before), meditation and mindfulness is what cured her and will KEEP her cured. This shift in mindfulness–knowing the connection of what you put into your body affecting what happens to your body–is everything. We truly are what we eat, what we feel and what we do. And til the day I die, I’d like to be a mindful, intuitive being! Right alongside my mother, and soon enough hopefully alongside the rest of our family as they continue to learn more about putting healthy, healing foods into their bodies.
