Medicinal Mushrooms-Magic and Healing

Medicinal mushrooms have amazing healing benefits.

Modern scientific research examining the Ganoderma (Reishi) mushrooms has revealed a variety of potential health benefits:

* anti-cancer properties

* immune system up-regulation

* liver-protecting properties

* antibacterial properties, antiviral properties and antifungal properties

* reducing radiation-induced damage

* reducing lower urinary tract symptoms

* increasing exercise endurance

* inhibitory effect on high blood pressure, due to ACE inhibitor properties.

* inhibitory effects on angiogenesis (via inhibition of VEGF), blood platelet creation, and fibrosis.

Healing Benefits of Maitake (from Wikipedia):

In 2009, a phase I/II human trial, conducted by Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center, showed Maitake could stimulate the immune systems of breast cancer patients.

In vitro research has also shown Maitake can stimulate immune system cells. An in vivo experiment showed that Maitake could stimulate both the innate immune system and adaptive immune system.

In 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an Investigational New Drug Application for a portion of the mushroom.

Ways to get medicinal mushrooms into your daily regime:

  • put the mushroom powder into a smoothie (my fave is inside a chocolate smoothie)
  • put the mushroom powder into a dish that has mushrooms into it anyway (sneak it into a gravy or dressing)
  • make a tea out of the powder

Guide to AcroYoga with Your Family + 3 Poses to Try

We've been doing AcroYoga as a family since Kai was a baby and with every baby since! It's been such a beautiful way to be creative, playful, physical, spiritual and BOND/connect to one another. Especially as an adult, it's so easy to forget to play and laugh and be free.

We turn to this yoga in the moments we need a reset, the energy levels are high, and for the days you can’t get rid of the kids but want to shift the energy — YOGA PLAY!!!!! You don’t need any special skills, just an open heart, curiosity, trust and most importantly, communication.

This is perfect for couples who need to move through challenges or feel like you want a unique way to connect. This is perfect for moms and dads of littles who want to shake up the energy in the house and get your kids moving in a fun way that stretches their brain and encourages creative play. Give this a try next time you feel overwhelmed with your littles or with life. The sweetness will lift your spirits.

After you move and flow, finish with a big glass of water with Sunshine Drops for replenishment and cleansing hydration. The whole family can enjoy!

    Tips to Acro Yoga

The Base is the person on the bottom that creates the foundation for each pose.

The Flyer is the person elevated by the base and for couples they will also need strength and balance for a successful practice.

Communication is key to a successful practice. Be open with what you’re feeling and your intentions for the pose/practice. It is especially important to communicate coming in and out of the pose. Parents you should do this with your littles too! Don’t just lift them sky high, communicate, ask and share!

For parents and couples, warm up before the poses. With ANY yoga pose I do I warm up with a few sun salutations and stretching. Your body needs to be flowing and open.

It’s all about the journey. You don’t need to go into crazy poses right away. Build trust and start slow.

Take lots of breaks with water + Sunshine Drops and replenish with a superfood smoothie!

    3 Beginner Poses to Try

    BIRD POSE

A great pose for beginners and littles because it is a very stable pose. The transition into this pose is great practice for the flyer to keep their body fully engaged and the base to learn how to balance the flyer.

Base - From a stable position, press your toes into your flyer’s lower belly. This helps them lift their chest.

Flyer - If you feel stable, let go of your base’s hands and reach your arms back like bird’s wings.

This is an easy one to do with your kid’s and the younger they are, just keep hold of their hands/arms until they are ready to let go.

    PLANK ON PLANK

This is great for couples as it helps both partners build core strength and support one another.

Base - Take Plank Pose, with your hands shoulder-width apart, arms straight and vertical, core engaged.

Flyer - Facing your base’s feet, place your hands on their ankles. Press down with straight arms, lift the foot closest to your base, and place your ankle on his more distant shoulder. Point toes and press into the top of that foot. Engage your leg and core muscles. Place your second foot on your base’s near shoulder.

    BOW POSE

We love this one with our little Leo. This pose allows your flyer to play with a more advanced asana midair.

Flyer - Once you’re stable in Front Bird, slowly bend your knees and grasp your feet. Keep your core engaged, legs strong, and chest lifted, breathing slowly and deeply, trusting your base to support you.

Base - Point your toes even more to help lift the flyer’s chest.

If you’re still unsure about giving AcroYoga a try but want to then just go for it! This is an amazing yoga practice to build connection and community. It keeps your practice playful and challenges you, your partner and family in new ways.

The Magic of Superfoods: Spirulina and Camu Camu

    Philosophie Superfoods

What can we say, we can’t get enough of superfoods! If your mood or energy has been suffering lately you might want to explore the ingredients you’re flooding your body. Stress, poor sleep, and a lack of nutrition can drain your energy but there are magical superfoods that can give you the boost you need.

Check out these two incredible superfoods found in our Green Dream and Berry Bliss superfood blends and how these potent foods can help you achieve a glowing state of optimal health.

    Philosophie Green Dream

    SPIRULINA

Spirulina, an ancient, single-cell, blue-green algae (technically classified as a cyanobacteria) is considered one of nature’s most perfect foods.

At 50-70% protein, spirulina ranks as the highest source of protein in the plant kingdom. The algae is able to quickly synthesize concentrated amounts of protein and is in itself a “complete protein,” which means that it’s able to provide all the essential amino acids that our bodies need! Spirulina receives its beautiful bluish tint from phycocyanin, a water soluble antioxidant that helps protect our cells against radiation and provides the blood with more oxygen.Spirulina is a DENSE with nutrients—it's full of fatty acids (including sulfur gamma linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid that promotes healthy skin and joints), polysaccharides, vitamin B-12, and minerals, including iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium, and chromium! ‘Nuf said.

The algae is supportive of healthy brain function and aids in the production of tryptophan, an amino acid that makes serotonin, a critical mood stabilizer! Spirulina is bursting with antioxidants, including zeaxanthin, cryptoxanthin, phycocyanin, betoa-carotein, superoxide dismutase, and lutein. These free-radical fighting molecules bolster the immune system, combat invasive viruses and pathogens, and promote healthy vision and beautiful skin.

    Philosophie Green Dream

Like all plants, spirulina contains chlorophyll, a pigment that collects sunlight and transforms it into energy. In addition to this essential job that fuels life on earth, chlorophyll also purifies the blood, cleanses the nervous system and liver of toxins, and is a rich source of iron, which prevents anemia.

I’m a big fan of spirulina and use it in all our Green Dream products.

    Philosophie Berry Bliss

    CAMU CAMU

Acai, Goji berry and Camu Camu are all exotic, enchanting fruits that are extremely high in vitamin C and A, giving them lots of antioxidant superpowers. Antioxidants help prevent aging and disease by combating the effects of oxidation in our body tissues. Camu Camu is a small red berry that grows in the Peruvian jungle, and has the highest vitamin C content of any fruit on the entire planet – over 20 times the C found in two pounds of oranges (wow)!  You’ll find that these superfoods come in many forms including powders, pills and frozen. All can be added to juices, smoothies, or even added to oats or greek yoghurt.

Mix it into smoothies, oatmeal or yogurt or even add it to your tea (so long as the water isn’t boiling hot).

Celebrate Summer Solstice with These Soul-filled Rituals

    Sophie Jaffe Summer Solstice

On Sunday, June 20th we welcome a solstice, an earthly transition. Change is happening. Energy is shifting and we enter a new cycle and season.

For us, in the Northern Hemisphere, we are drifting into the heart of summer - longer days and shorter nights. Physically and energetically we experience more light. This is a time of celebration, to honor the fire within. When lightness feels heavy and all you can see and feel is darkness, follow precious moments and experiences that make you feel light again.

Go to the light. Live in the light. Love in the light. Decide, this season, to be the light.

We are also entering feminine, watery and motherly Cancer season. Astrologically, the Sun is associated with masculine energy. Cancer season rules the feminine energy and is ruled by the Moon. This is a divine time of balance.

Use this season to reflect on ways you can balance the masculine and feminine within. Where can you be more gentle, open and receptive? Where can you be more fiery, action-oriented and decivide? We all contain both energies within us, the solstice is a beautiful moment to widen what this means to us.

    Sophie Jaffe Summer

On the summer solstice rituals are performed all over the world to celebrate Earth’s abundance and remind us of the fullness of our lives. We’re sharing some of our favorite rituals to help celebrate this transition and maye make some of these rituals into a daily recurrence.

Celebrate the summer solstice with these soul-expanding rituals!

Set intentions and manifestations for the season ahead. At every new season we begin again. Summer is a season of letting go, of ending to start new. Set out intentions and manifestations for how you want to feel at the end of summer. What do you want to create?

Toast to the season with a Sunshine Drops Mocktail. Make it a season of hydration and elevate your water with herbal infusions, superfoods and chlorophyll. Take water, lemon, mint and of course, Sunshine Drops then pour over ice and enjoy!

    Philosophie Sunshine Drops

Gather with others and celebrate. This is a season of gatherings and reunions! Exchange songs, stories, and poems with loved ones. Dance, sing and celebrate.

Light a fire (or burn candles). You can make a big fire like a bonfire with friends or a small fire in the form of a candle and it can be just as powerful.

Start your day in a HIGH VIBE way. Start your day with this Creamy Green Chlorophyll Smoothie and Summer Cacao Lemon Toast to nourish your body, elevate your energy, and balance your mood.

    Philosophie Summer Cacao Lemon Toast

Journal. On the solstice, the sun is at its peak. Use the following prompts to inspire you and reflect -

    • Write about a time you recently felt at your peak? What have you accomplished recently that you feel proud of?
    • This is a time of letting go. What has reached its end in your life? What no longer serves you? How will releasing this allow you to change and grow?

The Benefits of Filtered Water in Your Superfood Coffee

    Big Berkey and Sophie Jaffe

We LOVE starting our day with superfood coffee. It has all we need to energize us and fuel our body for the day. But there’s something about a fresh cup of coffee at your local coffee shop that tastes SO good. Curious why that is? It’s hard to brew coffee that tastes as good as coffee brewed in a shop. That is, if you normally use plain faucet water.

The reason why coffee shops have a better-tasting brew is that they use filtered water. Many companies either have filtered water faucets or use filtered water coffee brewers. While you may not have coffee shop grade machinery, you CAN produce quality coffee at home, simply by using filtered water.

Here are a few reasons why using filtered water in your homemade superfood coffee makes it 10x better! [SHOP OUR SUPERFOOD COFFEE BUNDLE AND SAVE!]

    Superfood Coffee Image

    The coffee tastes much better.

Since water makes up 98 percent of your coffee, it’s safe to say the quality of your water makes a huge difference. Companies like Berkey offer some of the best countertop water filters on the market for instantly providing clean water. Installing one of these can dramatically improve the taste of coffee you brew at home, regardless of the method you use.

    It makes your water healthier.

When you drink tap water, the weird taste is because of toxins and bacteria that naturally occur in standard faucet water. So, when your coffee has a metallic aftertaste, it’s because you’re ingesting whichever metals are in your faucet.

When left unfiltered, these toxins and metals begin to negatively impact your immune system. Perfluorinated compounds, or PCUs, reduce your body's amount of healthy immune cells. This makes you vulnerable to a number of health conditions that can even be fatal.

Other compounds like chlorine can also be found in tap water. While it does help to disinfect your tap water, chlorine can be dangerous for your immune health when you inhale or ingest it.

These toxins attach to your filter, leaving you with healthier, cleaner water. So. you won’t have to feel guilty about harming yourself if you choose to have an extra cup of coffee during a stressful day.

    Philosophie Superfood Coffee

It’s a cost-effective alternative to buying filtered water.

Whether you drink multiple cups of coffee throughout the day or have more than one coffee drinker in your home, buying filtered water to brew coffee everyday gets expensive. Statistics show that the average coffee drinker consumes three cups per day. Having to buy enough water to drink and make coffee everyday can add up relatively quickly.

Obviously, there are some upfront costs to purchasing a water filter. However, you will save money and time in the long run because you won’t have to leave your home when your bottles run out. In addition to cutting financial costs, you’ll also reduce your environmental footprint.

It maintains your brewing equipment longer.

Some people argue for using tap water because certain compounds in it improve the taste of coffee. However, the same minerals and compounds that bring out the flavors in your coffee damage your brewing equipment over time.

Limescale can gather in your coffee brewer without you being able to see it. Eventually, your coffee won't get as hot and your brewer will stop working. When you use filtered water, your machine stays cleaner and produces quality coffee for longer.

Even if you do use filtered water, you need to clean your coffee brewer occasionally. Descaling a coffee brewer removes excess mineral buildup. To clean your coffee brewer, you need to clear any excess water or coffee grounds from your machine. Follow up by adding equal parts water and vinegar into the water chamber and allowing your brewing cycle to run halfway through.

Turn it off and let it sit for an hour before finishing the brew cycle. Pour your vinegar mixture from your coffee carafe and repeat the process with only water a couple of times so your coffee won’t taste like vinegar.

From now on, you can ALWAYS enjoy your favorite cup of superfood coffee. With a water filtration system, you'll also never have to compromise the quality and taste of the coffee you brew at home. Be sure to do your research and find a water filter that fits your home and your budget. Both your wallet and your taste buds will thank you.

Fun + Simple Ways to Exercise and Move Your Body

Sophie Jaffe Berry Bliss Roller Skates

Exercise doesn’t have to look like completing some sort of strenuous activity while your body drips in sweat. It also doesn’t mean spending hours at a gym 6 days a week or running a mile every morning. It doesn’t have to “look” like anything as long as you feel GOOD doing it.

I used to be a personal trainer and would push my body to new extremes to be in the best “shape” of my life. I was exhausting myself and I never felt awakened or energized as one would expect after getting in shape. Instead, I felt depleted and weak. I decided to change the rules about how I exercised and fell in love with yoga. Until then I had only really moved my body for athletic purposes, so yoga really felt good for my skin and soul. Yoga helps me connect with my inner nature. It helps me to tap into my core, my truth and provides me with insights of who I really am. Yoga always brings me back to my truest essence.

After having Noa and then experiencing the global shutdown the idea of a strict exercise regimen has been nearly impossible. Instead, I’ve followed my intuition in every aspect of my life and that includes how I move my body.

That’s the beautiful thing. Exercise can be as simple as walking around your neighborhood and doing some at-home HIIT exercises in your living room. Exercise can look like a new workout class you’ve never tried before like pilates, barre, or hot yoga. Exercise is falling in love with the way your body moves and finding new joy in moving it and challenging yourself to new growth. It’s finding vibrant energy because of the way “exercise,” fuels and ignites you.

    Sophie Jaffe Yoga

Some of the biggest obstacles we face in motivating ourselves to exercise are mostly internal blocks. Maybe you think that no matter how many crunches you do or how many miles you run on the treadmill, nothing changes and you still look the same. Or you’re frustrated because you don’t know how to work your way around a gym, do yoga or run properly. These internal blocks are our biggest enemy and can easily be conquered with a change in perspective.

Exercise is NOT about how much or how long you can “work out,” it’s about feeling unapologetically good inside your body and having so much vibrant energy it radiates from you.

Here are some of my favorite and simple ways to move your body!

Energize your body with high vibe nourishment! Starting your day with a superfood smoothie is a great way to fuel up and energize before getting in some movement. You could sit down and do thousands of situps and if you still eat unhealthy foods, you absolutely will not feel the way you want to feel. Make an energizing pre-workout smoothie with Cacao Magic or Berry Bliss then refuel post workout with Coconut Magic and Sunshine Drops.

    Sunshine Drops Liquid Chlorophyll

Start small. Experiment a little. For me, it really depends on the season. During the warmer months, I love outdoor workouts where I can enjoy the beauty of nature while getting a good sweat. A sandy beach yoga practice or a long hike in the mountains near my home is ideal when the sun is shining, but on cold and dreary winter days I like to take my workouts inside with some solid sessions in the gym.

Get creative with your daily habits and chores! For as long as I’ve been active I’ve found CREATIVE fun ways to do so all day long. You don’t have to do a classic / long form workout every day to be in shape/fit or healthy. Sometimes it’s jump squats while I brush my teeth, other times it’s push-ups while my kids build legos, maybe it’s calf raises or squats while I wash or dry dishes. A few leg lifts while I watch a TV show with Adi or doing 2-3 min of yoga/handstands during the workday when I’m feeling stagnant. It all *COUNTS* + IT ALL ADDS UP.

Track your movement and count your steps. I’ve challenged myself to walk 10,000 steps every day which may seem crazy but when you track even just walking around her home picking it after your kids it starts to add up! I’ve found the best way to motivate myself is getting a simple fit tracker off Amazon and being more conscious about walking. Craving a coffee? Walk to your local shop. Need to mail a packing? Walk to your local post office. There’s so many fun ways to get in your movement without even stepping foot in the gym.

Once you tell yourself that it’s not about how you look or the number on the scale and instead about how you feel during and after then you slowly begin to fall in love with exercising. It always comes back to loving yourself.

Finding what really works for you whether that’s yoga, cycling or outdoor running can dramatically change the way you approach exercise. You’ll be motivated to go out and challenge yourself. You’ll notice immediate changes in how you carry yourself and the kind of relationships and opportunities you bring into your life because you begin to fall back in love with YOU.
