Alkaline Foods: finding the balance

[caption id="attachment_653" align="alignleft" width="206" caption="Philosophie Green Juice"][/caption]

Where the laws of nature have been overlooked we find disease (dis-ease: a disruption to ease). There is only one disease: toxicity and enervation, a lack of nerve force.

Alkaline foods are foods that raise the the amount of oxygen that your blood takes in. The most alkalizing foods are RAW green leafy vegetables, non-sweet fruits and (wheat) grasses. The opposite of alkaline foods are acid foods.

How much oxygen your blood can absorb is measured on a pH scale that ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 0 is most acidic while a pH of 14 is most alkaline.

Eating alkalined foods is good for you and the Earth because it is completely in harmony with natural law. Fresh, delicious, organically grown alkaline food that is good for the land, promoting shade-bearing vegetation that rejuvenates soil and contributes to purifying lakes, rivers and oceans.

This way of eating is the ultimate healing program. Start with a Philosophie cleanse to experience this way of eating yourself!

The Acid - Alkaline Balance

Our blood is in balance when we're slightly alkaline: with a pH of 7.365. The blood is an organ-a liquid organ. It streams through the vascular system, throughout the arteries, away from the heart, and returns via the veins to the heart once again.

In the beginning of the 20th century, very smart scientists and nobel prize winners made a great discovery. If our blood cannot absorb enough oxygen we get sick: cancer, heart issues, arthritis and candida infections and diabetes are the result.

You know that our body tries to maintain a constant temperature 98.5F or 37C. But but do you know that your body tries even harder to maintain the right amount of oxygen in your blood (a pH of 7.365)? When our pH is too high or too low, we don't feel well, we feel tired, gain weight, have poor digestion and get aches and pains.

Most people in the US and Europe are too acidic: they cannot absorb enough oxygen. That's why cancer, heart disease, arthritis and diabetes are epidemic.

Why are we too acidic?

* Stress

* Toxins

* Parasites and

* The FOOD we eat.

Acid Foods List

It seems that what we eat is more of a health factor than people have thought. Common reasoning is that there is a multitude of disease. However, keeping blood and body tissue at a proper pH seems to keep premature death at bay and makes the difference between vitality and death. This is the secret of an alkaline body. It's too bad that the foods most people like make us most acidic and thus sick. What are these food? You guessed right:

Alkaline Foods List

During most of our lives, the majority of the foods we eat are (highly) acidic. These make us sick and tired. By eating raw alkaline foods and drinks, we can help our body to heal it self from most dis-eases:

  • Vegetables - especially raw green leafy vegetables
  • Fresh Herbs & Spices - parsley, basil, cilantro, cayenne, ginger
  • Fruits - watermelon, avocado, cucumber, young coconuts
  • Wheat grass
  • Sprouts: i.e. alfalfa, mung bean, broccoli etc.

The best alkaline drinks are alkaline water, vegetable juices and wheatgrass juice.

How Acidic Are You?

How do you know your body pH? I love this one, because it's incredibly easy to find out what your alkalinity is. You simply buy some pH test strips (also called litmus paper) at a health store and pee on it. The paper will tell you instantly what your pH is and thus, how alkaline or acid you are.

The Best & Easiest Alkaline Foods

Would you like to know the best and cheapest alkalizing foods? Edible wild plants. They're highly alkaline, abundant, fresh and free!

Just throwing a few of them in your salad will help balancing you. Try sea veggies for a great alkaline food!

Go to a local farmers market and check out the local organic produce.

Hummus Spiralized Veggie Platter

Sometimes I don't really feel like making a “normal” dinner. All I want is veggies - both raw and roasted - compiled into a meal. If you like your spiralized zucchini sautéed, feel free to sautée them for 2-3 min over medium heat with 1 tsp coconut oil. Sometimes I want them sautéed, other times I like the refreshing raw crunch. It's a personal preference! We have a beet hummus recipe that's out of this world if you want to make your own, if not, we love Hope hummus and garlic majestic brands.

Gather This:

1 cup Hummus

1 Roasted Sweet Potato

1 Spiralized Zucchini + 1 Yellow Squash

Fried Banana

Handful of Organic Blueberries

1 handful of Kale

1 tsp Green Dream

Hemp Hearts

EVOO+Salt // Pepper

Do This:

Slice and Roast the sweet potato in the oven on 400 degrees for 20 minutes. While that roasts, spiritualize the vegetables and dress with Salt+Pepper. Slice a banana quarter size and fry in Coconut Oil, for 2 minutes on each side. Chop the kale and saute for 4 minutes in Coconut Oil. Spread out the hummus on the platter, layer the sweet potato, add on fried bananas, pile on the spiralized veggies, sprinkle the blueberries, kale, a drizzle of EVOO, Salt, Pepper and Green Dream!

Cacao Magic Cheesecake

Who else is feelin’ some cacao today? Yes, please. This variation of a vegan cheesecake is extra delish and packed with yummy goodness for your body and soul. Your food palette doesn’t need to suffer when you’re making smart and BALANCED food choices. Never say no to a sweet fix and your body will be thanking you for this one.

Our Cacao Magic Cheesecake makes 24 slivers of a large pie or 4 smaller pies with 6 slices. We used a food processor for easy prep, but you can make it work with what you have on hand.

Gather this:

For the Crust

2 cups raw macadamia nuts OR a blend of almonds, walnuts and pecans

1/2 cup dates, pitted

1/4 cup dried coconut

For the “Cheese”

3 cups chopped cashews, soaked for at least 1 hour

3/4 cup lemon juice (or lime juice-i used limequats for this! so yum)

3/4 cup honey (Use the Philosophie Cacao Bee Honey for a touch of nutrients!)

3/4 cup coconut oil

1 tbsp Cacao Magic

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon celtic sea salt (optional)

For the Topping

A sprinkling of Cacao Magic followed by:

Halved and whole fruit (we used blueberries, strawberries, and white dragon fruit; flower petals are a bonus)

Do this:

To make the crust, process the nuts and dates in the food processor. Sprinkle dried coconut onto the bottom of an 8 or 9 inch springform pan. Press crust onto the coconut. This will prevent it from sticking.

To make the cheese, blend the cashews, Cacao Magic, lemon juice, Cacao Bee honey, gently warmed coconut oil, vanilla, sea salt, and 1/2 cup water. Blend until smooth and adjust to taste.

Pour the mixture onto the crust. Remove air bubbles by tapping the pan on a table.

Place in the freezer until firm. Remove the whole cake from the pan while frozen and place on a serving platter. Defrost in the refrigerator. (the more defrosted the better the taste)

Place fruits/toppings as you'd like and ENJOY!

A DIY Philosophie Facial for Glowing Skin

As we've spent the summer playing in the sun and are now entering the cold air of fall + winter, it's time to give our skin some much-needed love + care. This week, carve out half an hour for a healing, detoxifying at-home facial that includes a Green Dream Mask, a Berry Bee Mask, and a nourishing Chrysalis Mist + Facial Oil. While you're letting the superfoods work their magic on your skin, relax in a Chrysalis Detox Bath to get the full-on spa experience. Afterwards, we promise you'll look + feel like a radiant goddess ♥
Step 1: Draw a Chrysalis Detox Bath
In contrast to what you see at your local health food store, the Chrysalis Soak is not your mother's bath salts. This combo of sea salt, baking soda, grapeseed oil, and essential oils work together to open your skin and draw sluggish toxins out of your system, all while you're relaxing in a fragrant, skin-softening bath.
Step 2: Create a Green Dream Face Mask
Mix our Green Dream Superfood + Protein Blend with water to create a thin paste and apply gently to your face so it can beautify your skin for 10-15 minutes. Spirulina, the star ingredient in Green Dream, brightens skin, combats free radicals, and helps reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles!
Step 3: Apply a Berry Bee Face Mask
This one's super simple! Just scoop out a spoonful of our healing, superfood-infused honey, apply it to your face, and let sit for another 10 minutes before rinsing off. We absolutely love honey for its healing, antibacterial properties. This golden liquid contains an abundance of minerals, vitamins, natural enzymes, and antioxidants that'll make your skin oh-so-healthy + beautiful.
Step 4: Mist Your Face with Our Chrysalis Water
A high concentration of acid-balancing witch hazel in our Chrysalis Water makes it a moisturizing miracle for skin, while the energetic flower essences renew the mind + spirit!
Step 5: Apply a Chrysalis Face Oil

This healing oil acts as moisture balancer, problem skin solution, and anti-aging miracle.  It conditions and softens the skin while clearing up irritation, dissolving sebum in clogged pores, reducing wrinkles, AND firming the skin by boosting collagen production.
