Philosophiemama's Food Journal

I’ve had several requests for a post sharing what I eat in a day. So, here goes!

Sophie Jaffe in kitchen - philosophie superfoods

Remember that preparation is everything in eating healthy. No excuses! Pick two days a week and prepare by chopping veggies, making smoothies + soups, + going grocery shopping.  Smoothies + Soups will last 2-3 days in a closed container + both can be frozen for 2-3 weeks and then defrosted by placing in fridge the night before.

I start my day {around 6:30am} with a big glass of room temperature alkaline water. After the glass is finished I have a small tea cup filled with warm/hot water with lemon, a pinch of cayenne pepper, 1 t apple cider vinegar, a touch of fresh ginger juice + 1 t green dream or berry bliss manuka honey.

From then, I’ll have breakfast. During that time I’m making food for the kids, and it took a lot of self discipline to learn not to snack on their food mindlessly. I actually did my 14 day cleanse in order to get out of that bad habit that I couldn’t seem to break. After day 7 of the cleanse I didn’t even WANT their food, I couldn’t wait to dive into my own breakfast when I was ready.

Most days I will have a large breakfast {listed below} but on days when I have a workout planned for early I will either have a piece of fruit or start with a green juice. Something simple.

{Philosophie Cacao Magic Chia Seed Pudding}

{Berry Bliss Superfood Parfait}

For most larger breakfast days I will have a huge bowl of superfood egg white oats, chia seed pudding, green eggs with tons of veggies or a gigantic 30oz Superfood smoothie. I always add my super foods to everything above to add nutrients, vitamins + bonus protein. It also gives me more energy to start my day instead of just eating those foods plain. These foods POWER ME UP for the day + activate my brain + focus.

On the weekends we will sometimes have brunch with my parents and make superfood gluten-free pancakes.

My husband is Israeli + I will NOT give up an opportunity for shashuka if it presents itself! {a traditional israeli breakfast with over easy eggs, tomato + lots of herbs}

About an hour and a half or 2 hours later I will have a large 160-20oz green veggie juice. This is filled with mostly green leafy veggies {spinach/collard greens/kale/swiss chard etc} cucumber, celery, parsley, dandelion root, apple cider vinegar, ginger, extra liquid chlorophyll + a pear or apple to sweeten it. Most days, a piece of raw chocolate needs to fit into this snack :)

Then I drink alkaline water with peppermint essential oil or lemon until lunch. This is what I sip on most of the day in between meals. I try and wait 15-20 min after the meal so I can properly digest before flooding my system with water. Then after the time has passed, I’ll drink as much as I possibly can before I eat again.

For lunch I usually always have a superfood smoothie or a large salad. The majority of days I’m on the go at a demo in a store or working with my team at our headquarters so we will just make a large vat of smoothie for all of us to have in between the insanity that ensues. If I’m at home, I almost always have a large salad like the one I shared on New Beauty’s youtube channel.

mid-afternoon, around 3p, I’m back with my kiddos and we all share a snack. Usually this is sipping on fresh juice or a smoothie with something I’ve made like raw cacao magic chocolates, truffles, homemade energy bar or a baked good I created with the superfoods.

We are usually outside or at the park so this is the easiest thing to bring

along. We all share the juice or smoothie so it’s just enough to take the edge off until dinner.

cacao magic muffins - philosophie superfoods, vegan, gluten-free muffins

Sometimes we will just bring fresh fruit and raw veggies and they do really well with that because it’s so refreshing while they are playing hard. It’s so hydrating for their widdle bodies :) Then we are all sipping on water while we play + enjoy each other.

Sometimes I will sneak a little snack for myself like a spoonful of almond or coconut butter to hold me over for dinner. It also helps me not to overeat at night if I eat enough during the day. I hate feeling ravenous at night so I’ve learned over time to pump my body with NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS all day long so I can eat like a normal human when the sun goes down and not like an animal.

While I’m making dinner I’ll listen to beautiful music, my favorite is Krishna Das, + I try to drink water the entire time instead of having wine or something else. This time is sacred for me, it feels like a moving meditation as I chop veggies + prepare food with love for my beautiful family.

Gluten-free stuffing recipe:

It’s really important to me to make dinner for the kiddos + that we all have homemade dinners as a family, sharing our day, experiences + lives together. While the kids are waiting + playing I will put out “appetizers” of raw veggies cut up with some sort of dip like hummus or tahini.

For dinner my go-to meals are either a stir fry made with TONS of fresh veggies or a veggie curry with coconut milk + turmeric.

We get all our veggies from the farmers market or from our delivery box LOVE. It’s so fun to get them delivered because then you are forced to go outside your comfort zone + learn about new veggies + fruit instead of getting stuck in a boring routine.

Every week it’s slightly different + i feel more connected to nature + the environment because of what’s in season. Oftentimes I’ll just take whatever veggies are left over and bake them so I can keep playing with the kids. I love making gluten-free stuffing. Whatever works, right?

3-4 days of the week my husband joins us for dinner. On those nights we will sometimes add a protein to dinner, salmon, organic grass-fed meat, organic turkey or chicken. I don’t prepare meat… I’m a raw vegan food chef so all my cooking/training has been in that cuisine. So if Adi is home, we will eat non-vegan food :)

Occasionally when I’m feeling lazy or don’t feel like chopping veggies I will make gluten-free pasta + add Green Dream to the marinara sauce to make it more nutrient dense. I always add fresh herbs to everything I create for extra nutrients.

Other times we’ll have a vegan superfood soup which can be made ahead of time and just warmed. The kids love slurping it with a spoon!

Vegan Gluten-free soup - in the Nourish Cookbook

The kids have amazing palettes + eat just about every single thing I put

on their plates. I feel INCREDIBLY grateful for that, as I know it can be really hard for many parents. My best advice is to just keep trying. They will eventually come around if they keep being exposed to it + most importantly see YOU enjoying it regularly.

After the kids are asleep I usually want something else to nosh on so I will either have some sort of vegan ice cream (mint chip is my FAVE), raw or dark chocolate or a glass of wine. If I’m in a non-lazy mood I will make the ice cream myself with frozen bananas and my superfood blends or a chia seed cacao magic pudding.

I’d much prefer to waste those calories on dessert… my sweet tooth will just about always win :) I usually always have a tablespoon of nut butter before bed. I’ve read a few studies that say that this will help balance your blood sugar levels while you sleep. I’m all for any excuse to eat nut butter :)

April Ab Challenge with Philosophie Mama!

Here's the April Ab Challenge! My husband and I were just doing it on our own and we've gotten so many questions and interested people that I decided to start to post about it and share the love!

I can't stress enough how important ones diet is in having flat abs. I'm asked all the time how my abs are so fit and flat and I can't say it enough times: watch what you eat. See how it affects your body. Change what doesn't feel right.

You could sit down and do thousands of situps and if you still eat unhealthy foods, you absolutely will not have a six-pack. I, be no means, have a six-pack but I am trying to take my fitness to the next level by fine-tuning my diet and focusing every single day on bringing energy to my core. I very rarely sit down and do ab exercises. Most of what I do is full body. I run, spin, jog, walk, stairs, cross-fit, insanity, yoga, Pilates and strength train with weights. I MAYBE do 15 minutes a WEEK generally on concentrated ab exercises. This is why I think it will be a difference on my body. And if not, we'll know in 30 days! :)

A LOT of our physique is absolutely genetic and past a certain point can not be manipulated. But the MAJORITY (in my opinion) is what we eat and how we work our bodies. Develop strength and flexibility around your core (stomach/abs/back) and slow down. Work your entire body- arms, legs, back muscles and glutes, because THESE exercises strengthen the core.

If you have abdominal fat, no matter how much core strength though, you will not have abs, lines, obliques. You have to change your diet and increase your energy output. You need to burn off more calories than you eat to reduce the body fat. I haven't tested my body fat for a long time Set realistic expectations. Be patient. Build up your core strength with full body exercises, strength training, cardio and to reduce body fat and feel good in your skin reduce salt, breads, soft drinks and junk. Every workout and ever clean meal is one step closer. It's a goal. You have to plan on a slow and steady progression.

My 29th Birthday is on the 30th of April and as a b-day present to MYSELF I want to have the best lookin' abs I've ever had.

Here's what we're doing:

1) NO DESSERT for the full 30 days. We both have quite the sweet tooth, so this is the biggest challenge for us. Since we both do have such a sweet tooth, we're doing our best to have really clean "desserts" with my superfoods like raw, Cacao Magic pudding with avocado and frozen banana Green Dream ice cream. It helps, big time! We're also not doing those every day because that would almost defeat the purpose :) CHALLENGE FOR YOU: give SOMETHING up that makes you feel yucky. High sodium foods, processed or excess sugar, meat, dairy, alcohol. If you really want to drop some weight and feel amazing, drop all of those things and try my 14 day cleanse. I'll be doing it later this month!

2) morning and evening ab exercises. As I said above, I rarely do specific ab exercises. So we are doing them twice a day to see if it makes a difference. Energy goes where we put it so hopefully it will!

3) 30 minutes minimum of activity every day. Work up a sweat! Take the kids to the park and PLAY with them! Go for a long hike! Turn on the music in the house and do exercises and dance while you clean!

4) we will both be doing the 5 day Philosophie Spring Cleanse on April 15th. I'm so excited: new recipes, new detox bath soak and I always feel SO good after the 5 day cleanse! here's a video explaining it: http://youtu.be/IaZ43zCe8NY JOIN US!

please share below how you're doing, what you'd like to see specifically, how I can help, how you're being challenged, what your goals are... etc! Thanks so much for reading and loving YOU! <3

Cacao Magic Fiber Breakfast Cookies! Gluten-free & vegan

Fiber breakfast cookies with Cacao Magic

You know how you’ve heard people say “eat dark chocolate” for antioxidants and abundant health? Yeah, that’s because of UNPROCESSED, RAW, VEGAN Chocolate… CACAOCacao powder is chocolate in it’s most raw and nutritious form. The Philosophie Cacao Magic has Cacao nibs, Cacao powder, Tocos (Vitamin E- good for skin and nails), Mesquite (high in iron & protein), Maca (good for energy & balancing mood) and 3 medicinal mushrooms that are excellent for anti-aging, preventing cancer* and healing the body.

WET INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup chopped prunes or prune puree*
  • 1/4 cup sweetener (such as maple, brown rice or agave syrups)
  • 1/4 cup apple sauce
  • 1/4 cup nut butter (such as almond, pumpkin seed or tahini)
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 egg or 1/2 ripe banana
  • 1 tsp vanilla

DRY INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup whole grain flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1/2 cup psyllium
  • 1/2 cup ground flax
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup or more of nuts, seeds, trail mix, or chopped dried fruit
  • 2 TBL or more of Philosophie Cacao Magic

*to give them a sweeter taste, you could add chocolate chips!

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Place chopped prunes in a blender and just cover with boiling water. Let soak while you prepare the dry ingredients. Also, lightly oil a large baking sheet and preheat oven to 350.
  2. Measure all dry ingredients into a large bowl and mix well. Measure all wet ingredients into the blender with the soaked prunes (do not drain), then liquify and stir into dry ingredients, combining well. Drop batter by the heaping tablespoon onto the greased cookie sheet and flatten just a bit with wet fingers or the back of a wet spoon. Bake for 15 minutes. Make sure you have a glass of water or cup of tea with each cookie. Makes about 20 cookies.

This recipe makes the cookies slightly crunchy on the outside. For a softer cookie double the amount of prune puree and apple sauce. This will make them almost muffin-like.

Enjoy!

This amazing recipe was contributed and created by Julie Collier–THANK YOU, JULIE! Please keep sharing your delicious, creative recipes, Philosophie lovahs! I’ll keep posting them as you send them in!

Superfoods: what are they and what are the health benefits?

What are superfoods?

Superfood is a term sometimes used to describe food with high phytonutrient content that may provide health benefits as a result. For example, blueberries are often considered a superfood (or superfruit) because they contain significant amounts of antioxidants,, vitamin C, manganese, and dietary fiber. You don't need specific foods for specific ailments. A healthy diet incorporating a variety of the following superfoods will help you maintain your weight, fight disease, and live longer. One thing they all have in common: Every superfood is going to be a 'real' (unprocessed) food, you don't find fortified potato chips in the superfood category.

How can I use and incorporate superfoods in my daily life?

if you click on the words above I offer other posts I've written with more info about the wonderful superfoods and also a few recipes to use them in!

All of my superfood blends have all the best superfoods in one place. No need to purchase them all separately, just buy one bag instead of 8!

Cacao Magic superfood blend has raw Cacao powder, raw cacao nibs, tocos (vit E for hair, skin, nails) chia seeds (good fats to burn bad fat), maca (balances mood), reishi (chinese immunity herb), cordyceps (chinese herb for weightloss) and chaga (energizing herb with no caffeine).

The Green Dream superfoods have chia seeds, maca, mesquite (high in iron), tocos, spirulina, hemp powder and fresh vanilla bean.

Our Berry Bliss superfood blend has camu camu (top antioxidant food in the world), pomegranate, acai (combats stress), goji (prevents heart disease) organic whey protein (recovery & rejuvenation-very clean protein source) tocos (improves digestion, glowing skin & strong nails from Vitamin E) camu camu (immunity) and mangosteen (antibiotic & anti-fungal).

the Yummiest Superfood Yet ... Dark Chocolate

Research has shown that dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. It's recommended that you look for chocolate with 60% or higher cocoa content; the darker, the better! In addition, the darker it is, the lower the fat and sugar content. Now that's my kind of health food!

here are two recipes using dark chocolate/cacao (chocolate in it's most raw form):

1. Peppermint Patty Recipe

2. Delicious Chocolate Cake

and Here's an awesome breakfast I've been making lately--super filling and superfood rich!

Superfood Oats

  • 1 C Steelcut oats (follow instructions on the box)
  • 2 T Cacao Magic blend
  • 1 T goji berries (see pic below)
  • 1/2 Organic Canned Pumpkin
  • 1 t coconut oil (i like Garden of Life brand)
  • 2 T almond butter (i get Trader Joes brand, raw & creamy)
  • 1 T Agave or Raw Honey (i buy from our local farmers market) or Stevia if watching sugar
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • fresh berries for topping (like raspberries, blueberries, strawberries)

1. follow instructions on box for cooking steelcut oats. (can also use quinoa or instant low-sugar oats)

2. The last minute or so, add the pumpkin, almond butter, goji berries and cinnamon. Stir all ingredients until mixed.

3. Remove oats from heat. Mix the coconut oil, cacao powder and agave/honey/sweetener in the bowl you'll be using and mix well with a spoon until it forms a chocolate sauce. Pour oats in bowl. Add fresh berries. Enjoy!

*double/triple the amount so you can save in containers for easy power-breakfasts in the next few days!
